Living in a rural area has it’s challenges but the rewards are simply undeniable. Growing up in Wellston meant the entire community was your family. In the 70’s, (and likely further back than that) members of this community set their sights on joint efforts that would lead to the improvement of our way of living. Specifically, members of the Norman Township Fire Department Auxiliary worked together to host events that would increase tourism, raise funds for new equipment, and provide joy to the residents of this area. They hosted many activities including a 4th of July Festival dubbed “The Wellston Fizzle”, a Valentine’s Day dance, a New Year’s Eve Party, parades, many gatherings. Their newsletter, The Wellston Window, served as an update on community events and was delivered regularly.
40 Years later we are here attempting to do the very same thing as those who came before us, to revitalize Wellston. We face similar barriers to this success. Although we can identify some areas in which we stand to improve upon, we need to bring back the days when being part of a community meant something; when being a neighbor meant more than just living next door to someone. Firstly, as a community we can certainly stand to better support one another. Our intent is to provide exposure for the businesses that are located in our area and to promote utilizing those local businesses whenever possible. Not only do you deal more closely with the owner of local establishments but it creates a relationship that cannot be found in box stores. Additionally, shopping in Wellston boosts the local economy. One business uses it’s revenues to purchase from another to purchase from another who goes right back to the business that originally received the revenue. Local businesses are also more likely to support local events and local schools than big box stores. We have so much to gain by changing the way we do business by simply shopping locally whenever possible.
Excel Wellston was created by a group of current concerned business owners. We are concerned with the direction in which we seem to be heading. Our businesses are closing and revenues are falling short for some folks. The drug epidemic seems to be increasing at an unprecedented rate. We realize that there aren’t a lot of job opportunities in our area and we hope to see that change! Revitalizing Wellston is the answer. Drawing tourism and spending to our area, creating inviting spaces, and creating a sense of community in a world of division are the first steps to prosperity for our small town.
We would like to be able to accomplish these goals without asking for membership fees, donations, or volunteer time; however, we feel that it’s unrealistic to reach these goals without the assistance of our fellow business owners, friends, and community members. We have developed membership levels so that no matter what stage you’re at in business, you’re able to participate. We can use all the volunteers who are willing and hope that if enough are able to donate some time, no one will be devoting all of their time.
