A mosquito sample that was collected in Wellsboro Borough on May 28, 2026 has tested positive for West Nile Virus.
The risk of West Nile Virus transmission is still relatively low, but it is recommended that residents take the precautions listed below:
Stay indoors during peak mosquito hours
• Dusk to Dawn
Wear long sleeves, pants, and closed-toed shoes if possible
• Exposed skin may be at risk for biting mosquitoes
Wear bug spray
• Specifically bug spray containing at least 30% DEET
Remove all standing water from your property
• Birdbaths, wheelbarrows, and children’s toys can hold water which can breed mosquitoes.
• Extra surveillance is currently being conducted in the WNV affected areas as well as larval and adult mosquito control measures. Educational opportunities are available if residents are interested.
Residents, lawdowners, and business owners are strongly encouraged to remove and/or clean anything that could potentially hold water. This can include (but is not limited to): trash cans, birdbaths, scrap metal/iron, tires, kid pools, and wheelbarrows. These artificial habitats are prime for mosquito breeding, in fact, something as small as a bottle cap can breed mosquitoes.
