How to recognize an overdose:

Recognizing an opioid overdose can be difficult. If you aren't sure, it is best to treat the situation like an overdose—you could save a life.

- Administer naloxone or another opioid overdose reversal medication (if available) and then call 911.
- Try to keep the person awake and breathing and lay the person on their side to prevent choking.
- Do not leave the person alone.

Signs of an overdose may include:

- Unconsciousness or inability to awaken
- Slow or shallow breathing or difficulty breathing such as choking sounds or gurgling/snoring noise from a person who cannot be awakened
- Discolored skin (especially in nails or lips)
- Small, constricted "pinpoint pupils" that don't react to light

NHTSA Reminds Motorcyclists to Plan for a Sober Ride
This Labor Day Holiday

From August 19 through September 7, 2026, local law enforcement will be teaming up with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to remind motorcyclists to not get on a motorcycle after drinking. The message is clear: Ride Sober or Get Pulled Over.

Drunk riding puts everyone at risk. During the 2024 Labor Day holiday (6 p.m. August 30 - 5:59 a.m. September 3), there were 505 crash fatalities nationwide and 113 were motorcyclists. Of these 113 motorcyclist fatalities, 31 were killed in drunk-driving crashes.

If a motorcyclist intends to drink during a Labor Day festivity, they should plan ahead for a safe ride home by securing a designated driver or calling a taxi or rideshare. They shouldn’t wait until after drinking to plan how to get somewhere. Impairment clouds a person’s judgment and endangers others on the road. Planning ahead also means motorcyclists should arrange for a safe place to leave their bike.

The best rides end at home, not on the side of the road with flashing lights behind you. Ride sober and avoid a DUI- or worse.
