Reserves and their regional friends groups rely on NERRA to help enhance successful programs, strengthen the network, and enable reserves to better address growing challenges to

our nation’s estuaries, coasts, and communities. NERRA communicates the funding needs and priorities of the reserves to Congress and federal agencies and educates the general public education about the importance of estuaries and coasts. National Estuarine Research Reserve Association

👏 Reserves are good for business 👏

For example, Ohio’s Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve is a testing ground for innovative technology designed to make water quality monitoring faster, more affordable, and more accessible so we can track harmful algal blooms across the Great Lakes.

Many Alaskans don’t know that every wild salmon begins its life in the tiniest of headwater streams, often in their own backyards and miles from the ocean waters where fish are harvested.

The Kachemak Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve is working with Kachemak Heritage Land Trust to help residents of the southern Kenai Peninsula make the “salmon to land” connection and guide conservation of the lands that underpin one of Alaska’s most important industries, valued at $541 million in 2025.

Prudence Island, home to the Narragansett Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, has seen its deer population grow steadily, raising concerns about ecosystem health and Lyme disease-carrying ticks. In response, the Reserve has partnered to launch a pilot hunter education program, connecting new audiences to the land while supporting science-based wildlife management.

On a small island in the middle of Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay, a deer problem has become a conservation opportunity. Prudence Island, home to the Narra ...

Ohio's Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve leveraged its System-Wide Monitoring Program to help LightDeck Diagnostics pilot a rapid, portable detection system for harmful algal bloom toxins in Lake Erie. In the process, they helped refine a tool that identifies key toxins in under 10 minutes and gives water managers and water-dependent businesses across the Great Lakes early warnings for Harmful Algal Blooms.
