The Pursuit of Growth Never Stops.

This week showcased Wells firefighters’ commitment to continuous improvement.

Throughout the week, members attended advanced training in incident command, mayday management, Fire Instructor II certification, and NFPA 1403 live-fire operations. Today, firefighters trained with our mutual aid partners at the Hollis burn building, where they participated in live-fire evolutions to sharpen skills, build confidence, and strengthen regional partnerships.

Even with this training, our members responded to emergencies both locally and beyond. Yesterday, firefighters spent much of the day suppressing a large outdoor fire in Berwick through a tanker shuttle. Throughout the week, crews also handled emergency calls and public service requests, continuing to serve our community.

Behind the scenes, members attend classes, complete drills, reflect on lessons, and invest countless hours to become better firefighters and public servants.

We are proud of our members’ dedication. Their commitment to learning ensures they are ready whenever our community calls.

Last night, members of the Wells Professional Firefighters responded alongside the Ogunquit Fire Department, Wells EMS, and Wells Police Department to a vessel rescue off Ocean Avenue.

Due to the vessel's position on the rocks and the ongoing impact of the waves, firefighters quickly developed a rescue plan that required personnel to operate simultaneously from the shoreline, on the water, and in support roles.

Firefighter Nat Pierce, tethered to shore by a safety line, entered the water and made his way to the vessel, where he provided the occupant with a life jacket and helped initiate the rescue. Firefighters Josh Hart and Carissa Gordon managed the tether line from shallow water while Captain Tobeck coordinated rescue efforts with Ogunquit Fire Chief Russ Osgood, who served as Incident Commander. Firefighter Pierce then assisted the occupant, swimming alongside him, to Ogunquit Marine 1, where he was loaded onto the rescue boat and brought to shore for transport to the hospital.

The rescue was completed safely through the combined efforts of all agencies on scene, resulting in the successful removal of the vessel's sole occupant and transfer to awaiting EMS personnel.

Incidents like this remind us that successful outcomes rarely result from a single person. They are the product of training, teamwork, trust, and strong partnerships between neighboring agencies.

We are proud of the professionalism displayed by everyone involved and grateful for the outstanding cooperation between Wells, Ogunquit, Wells EMS, Wells Police, the United States Coast Guard, and all responding personnel.

Great work by all involved.

This morning, B-Shift responded to a two-vehicle motor vehicle accident on Mile Road near the Hannaford entrance involving a reported rollover with entrapment.

Crews quickly stabilized the vehicle, began extrication efforts, and assisted with patient care alongside Wells EMS. Due to a firefighter holding over during shift change, B-Shift responded with 5 firefighters instead of the department’s normal staffing of 4. That additional firefighter made a significant difference, allowing crews to perform multiple critical tasks simultaneously in the incident's initial moments.

Two patients were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Earlier this morning, Wells Firefighters responded to Aubuchon Hardware for a reported propane leak involving a 1,000 lb fill tank. Crews evacuated Aubuchon and neighboring Borealis Breads Wells to ensure everyone was safely out of the building.

Once outside, Aubuchon employees reminded us of one very important detail…

Tiny the cat was still inside.

FF Sean Connell re-entered the building and successfully located Tiny, bringing him out to safety and back to his relieved fans.

Then came the next mission: save the dough.

Borealis Bread explained that if their dough wasn't moved into the walk-in cooler within minutes, it would be ruined, potentially impacting tomorrow's business. FF Sean Connell and Captain McKay from Ogunquit Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 3771 stepped in to help address the situation and protect what mattered.

Some days it's fire attack and emergency response. Other days it's rescuing cats and saving bread dough.

Either way, it's about serving the community.

And for the record… Tiny is safe, tomorrow's bread is safe, and Sean may now be accepting applications as a professional cat wrangler.
