Preachers' Aid Society of New England

Preachers' Aid Society of New England Our Society has been in continuous service to United Methodist clergy and their families in New England since 1832.

We remain faithful to our core commitment to improving the quality of life among our United Methodist clergy. We care for retired pastors through our strong financial support for retiree health care, training in personal financial management, affordable housing, spiritual life retreats, and direct services to clergy families in need. In addition, we provide some special services for active clergy,

in an effort to support their spiritual, physical, and fiscal health today so that they can better serve their communities and, when ready, have a healthy transition into retirement.

Preachers' Aid Society Director of Clergy Family Services - Maine, Lynn Briggs, was recently visiting retirees in Downeast, ME. She shared some beautiful images that she got to enjoy during her travels. Connecting with retirees who have served the New England United Methodist Conference is one of the many important missions of the Preachers' Aid Society and we are so grateful to be able to support those that have given of themselves so sacrificially. Yesterday, June 3 2026, Preachers’ Aid Society hosted our Annual Clergy Luncheon. It was, once again, a wonderful time of connection and fellowship. At the Clergy Luncheon the following milestones in ministry were lifted up.

The following persons were Celebrating 50 Years of Ordination:
Janet E. Smith-Rushton
James W. Daniels Jr.
Barbara B. Herber
Linda Littlefield Grenfell
Wesley D. Williams
David Uhnkyu Pak

We shared congratulations with the 2026 Ordinands:

We also congratulated our new Retirees:

We presented 4 Taylor Fellowships for $10,700 each. This was the first presentation since Lois Taylor’s passing. She and Blaine created the Fellowship and the funds to support them over 30 years ago. Blaine died a year before the first Fellowship was granted in 1995. Lois sought to be present and a part of every presentation since they began. Her smile and stories will be missed, but we are thankful that Herb and John Taylor can carry on the tradition of the Taylor family presenting the Fellowships.

The winners this year are Elizabeth Bachelder-Smith, Peter Hey, John Mueller, and Janet Smith-Rushton. Elizabeth will be using the funds to add a deck to their retirement home. Peter will be using the funds to improve their summer cottage in southern Maine. John will be using his fellowship to explore many of the western National Parks. Janet Smith-Rushton will be giving her fellowship to 2 different charities. $10,000 to Waquoit Zero Waste Bulk Buying Group and $700 to H.O.M.E. in Orland, Maine. We congratulate all of this year’s winners.

Recently, Preachers' Aid Society (PAS) Director of Clergy Family Services - Southeast, Mimi Wood Magee, visited with some retirees who reside on Cape Cod.

David & Pamela Purdy. David & Pamela Purdy send their love from the Cape. Although the sun did not shine, Mimi, David, and Pamela enjoyed the warmth of friendship and great conversation. Not to mention, a nice walk in their garden.

George (& Maria) Webb. George is all about catching up with friends and colleagues. At 96, he expects many of his friends have passed, but he heartily welcomes written correspondence. He says, "my hearing is not what it used to be." Please reach out to Mimi Wood Magee if you would like George's address. Also, not to be ignored, Maria's gardens! They are more remarkable in person- just lovely.

The visitation program was started as a PAS initiative over 30 years ago and allows us to remain in connection with those who served the New England United Methodist Conference (NEUMC) and ensure that all remain connected to the greater NEUMC community. All of us at Preachers' Aid are grateful that we are able to support both the retirees and active clergy who serve and have served in New England in meaningful/relevant ways. Every year a Director of Clergy Family Services heads to Florida to visit with retired clergy who reside there. For the past several years, Mimi Wood Magee, has been the Director that makes the trip and ensures that retirees there remain in connection with the greater New England United Methodist community.

Pictured first - Jan Rhenow from the greater Orlando area enjoying a nice lunch with Mimi.

Crew: Did you know that most, if not all the people in this photo live within a mile of one another? It just worked out that way! Living so close makes it easy to meet for a casual lunch. Good thing it was casual because the food was not delivered and we had to quickly shift to sandwiches from Jimmy John's. Thanks to Janice for flagging down the delivery driver.

Also pictured - Minnie Lockhart with her son-in-law and daughter Valerie, Janice and James Schwartz with Ted Lockhart, Joyce Lovely, Penny and Stuart Price and lastly - Mimi and Karen Peters.

This concludes photos of the Florida trip 2026.... In spring 2027 Preachers Aid Society will be hosting a lovely lunch gathering, welcoming all retirees including their spouse or companion to a nice sit-down lunch at a restaurant to be determined. The Don Cesar, St. Petersburg Beach and The Vinoy, Downtown St. Petersburg are front runners, but we'll see- Mimi asked me to share that It was wonderful to see everyone and catch up. "I will keep in touch and please reach out at any time. Be sure, I'm already looking forward to seeing you again in 2027!"

All of us at Preachers' Aid Society are grateful that we are able to visit with those retirees that chose to live outside of New England and remain in connection. For more information about or to support this initiative, please visit www.preachersaid.org.

The Preachers' Aid Society (PAS) Directors of Clergy Family Services have all defined and started various "Passion Project" initiatives. Lynne Briggs, Director of Clergy Family Services - Maine, has spearheaded a Mission Trip program where congregation members volunteer to work on needed projects to support retired clergy who have served the New England United Methodist Conference. These pictures and video are from the first mission trip of 2026 in Sanbornville, NH. To learn more about or to support the work of PAS, please visit www.preachersaid.org.

This past Saturday Preachers' Aid Society (PAS) Director of Clergy Family Services - Maine, Lynne Briggs, hosted a Kentucky Derby gathering at the community Center at Wesley by the Sea (WBTS). The community center is open to all residents and beyond as a gathering space, whether it be for coffee gatherings, writing groups, Super Bowl viewings or Kentucky Derby celebrations, the space is well used and all of us at PAS are grateful we are able to offer this space. For more information about WBTS or the work of Preachers' Aid Society, please visit www.preachersaid.org.

The Board and Staff of the Preachers' Aid Society (PAS) meet twice a year to discuss the business and mission - report out on what has been accomplished and what our plans for future initiatives are. It is always a wonderful time of fellowship and sharing. At the past May meeting on Saturday, May 2 we elected three officers, two new appointments, Liz Costello and Bill Houlihan and welcomed back, former Board Member, Paul Parks. As the work of PAS spans all of New England and beyond, we as a staff only get together in person a few times a year. We are all grateful for this time of connection and sharing. For more information about or to support Preachers' Aid Society, please visit www.preachersaid.org.

Not too long ago, Preachers' Aid Society (PAS) Director of Clergy Family Services - Maine, Lynn Briggs, visited with Rolf Flood of Bangor, ME. During this time of connection Rolf shared pictures of the ships he served on during his time in the US Navy. The hat on the right is one of Rolf's favorites, the ship was named after the Captain in Pearl Harbor at the time it was attacked in WWII. Rolf is a Veteran of the Korean War. Lynn travels throughout the State of Maine visiting and connecting with retires clergy of the New England United Methodist Conference (NEUMC), ensuring these individuals remain in connection with the greater NEUMC community. For more than 30 years the visitation program has been an important part of the work and mission of PAS, to learn more about or to support this program, please visit www.preachersaid.org.

Preachers' Aid Society (PAS) Director of Clergy Family Services - Southeast, Mimi Wood Magee, got to witness true beauty in real time!

Mimi missed the photo opportunity with George & Ann Curtis. They enjoyed a great lunch at Crabby Joe's on the Sunglow Pier in Daytona Beach.

What was not missed was this glorious sunrise.

Due to the fact that many retirees of the New England United Methodist Conference have chosen to relocate to warmer climes, a PAS representative travels to Florida each year to connect with these individuals and ensure they remain in connection with the greater New England United Methodist community. Both staff and retirees look forward to this! This and all of our vital programs are made possible by supporters who believe in and choose to support our important mission. To learn more about or to support the work of Preachers' Aid, please visit www.preachersaid.org.

Mimi Wood Magee, Director of Clergy Family Services with Preachers' Aid Society (PAS), continues her connections with retirees in Florida!

After a stop in Miami and Juno Beach, Mimi arrived in Stuart, Florida to visit with Bob and Judy Fishel at their new home. They send their love to all and welcome cards and calls. For their contact information please reach out to Mimi.

As an added value Mimi was introduced to the Fishels' new friend, Rev. Conte Bliven's, a Drew graduate from the New Jersey Conference, Ordained in 1982.

The work of PAS is made possible by those who choose to support our mission and for that, all of us at Preachers' Aid are grateful. For more information about or to support the work of Preachers' Aid Society, please visit www.preachersaid.org.
