The global cost of child marriage is estimated at $175 billion a year, according to a new analysis by the Center for Global Development. “I believe it’s a human rights issue—I’ve always believed that—but I want to add the dimension that it is also an economic issue,” former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says.

Lean In founder Sheryl Sandberg emphasizes that lost wages, reduced workforce participation and declining health all feed into that number.

“When children become brides, they then have children,” she says. “You have 14-year-old girls having babies, and their bodies aren’t ready for that. That decreases their health and welfare and traps us in a cycle of poverty. If the world recognized what an economic issue this was, it wouldn’t just be people who care about women’s rights—it would be everyone, because everyone cares about the economy.”

When Meryl Streep spoke about equality, she cut through a common distortion, the idea that progress requires proving superiority.

That’s the barrier.

A system that frames gender as competition, forcing comparisons instead of addressing imbalance.

The risk of that framing is division.

It keeps the conversation focused on difference, rather than access, opportunity, and fairness.

But she reframed it.

Equality doesn’t require sameness. And it doesn’t require one group to outperform the other.

The struggle is shifting how people think.

Moving away from hierarchy and toward balance, where strengths aren’t ranked, but recognized without limiting potential.

That’s the breakthrough.

Understanding that equality isn’t about winning against someone else. It’s about removing the need to compete for basic standing.

That’s the legacy of the idea.

It redirects the conversation from comparison to structure.

And it leaves a sharper question.

If equality isn’t about who’s better, why does the system still depend on proving it?
