Wellington High School graduate Silvia Washington-Adkins, Wellington Public Library Director, and Missy Curry, Children’s Coordinator, spoke to us about all things about our 110 year-old Carnegie Library. Silvia has been Director since May 2006, after serving as Assistant Director for three years. She served in other library positions in other cities before moving back here. Our library was built for $17,000 and opened in 1916. They are currently undergoing a major $683,000 campaign to make needed repairs to the elevator, drainage issues, the front steps, and outdated restrooms. They received a grant and are trying to match funds. She noted that their team currently is working on promoting higher literacy. The library was recently highlighted in a Country Living magazine!
Enthusiastic Missy described some of the many children’s activities she schedules for little kids, teens, tweens, young adults and developmentally disabled youth including birthday club, story walk, and imagination station. They have a cozy, reading nook and cooperate and share resources with the USD 308 schools and home schools. check out the library to not only check out a book but take part in many other programs!
