Sheriff Darren Chambers provided an interesting program today. He began his law enforcement career in 1983 and has been Sumner County Sheriff since August 2011. The jail has 185 beds and is authorized to have, including part-time, 70 employees. There are generally around 30 inmates, but federal and state prisoners are housed here too, which is a huge revenue source for Sumner County. The employee turnover rate is high due to lower wages than Sedgwick County pays. Sumner County is paid $87/day per prisoner to house federal inmates. Thank you to Sheriff Chambers and staff for all they do.

Chris Graham, CEO of Caldwell Regional Medical Center, and Julie Hutchinson, Lab Manager, spoke to us and presented a nice slideshow of the wonderful amenities they offer. The Mefucal Center opened in 2023 and is growing. Chris has been in healthcare 25 years and is passionate about rural healthcare. He stated that they are a family oriented hospital and smaller, but services are top-notch. One thing they mentioned is direct access Physical Therapy. Direct access allows patients to go directly to physical therapy for evaluation and treatment without a referral for a physician or other healthcare provider, giving them the power to decide if they need physical therapy. They serve a 50 mile radius and encourage people to check them out!

Linda Chase, Wellington High School Agriculture Instructor, and two FFA students, Ava and Emma Bales, were our program today. The enthusiastic Mrs. Chase just finished year 28 teaching in Kansas, with the last 16 being at WHS. From growing flowers/plants to welding, the students learn so much. Last Friday at the USD 353 Employee Recognition program, Mrs. Chase was awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award, presented by the USD 353 Foundation!
The FFA program works with Cowley College and offer online classes in addition to the classroom.
FFA students will be busy this summer attending conferences, academies, fairs, and camps pertaining to leadership, careers, welding and much more!
In January the WHS FFA team traveled to Ft. Worth for the National FFA Turfgrass Science Invitational and came home National Champions! In fact individually the team swept 1st -4th places, with Boston Lawrence in the top place!
Ava and Emma each have two lambs and told us how judges look for muscle in the lambs, how they are built.
Wellington Middle School started an agriculture program just this year with Nick Wellington as instructor. They did great things too!

Tim Lira, WHS Head Track & Field Coach, was our speaker today. There are 61 athletes participating this year, and both boys and girls have had a successful season. Six school records have been broken and one has been tied. This is a very talented group and a few are dual spring athletes. He mentioned all those individuals who have a very good chance of qualifying for the State Meet in Wichita May 29-30. The Regional meet is this Friday at Andale. Good luck Crusaders!
He also mentioned that the eighth grade class has some talented male and female athletes so the future looks bright!
Big Lion Rhonda presented Rogan Wetta with the Junior Lions Award plaque for the boys. Last week she presented Evie Ewing with her plaque. We are proud of these Junior Lions Award Winners! 🦁🦁

Sumner Cowley Electric Chief Executive Officer, Coni Adams, and employees Tanner Ford and Danny Clark, presented an informative program today. Sumner County Electric is a not for profit owned by its members. Currently there are 10 employees with seven new linemen starting in January. They serve five counties and have 2,000 miles of line. The company is active and engaged in the community especially with youth. They awarded 26 high school student scholarships this year, the most ever. They have donated thousands of dollars to community projects also. Danny presented a safety demonstration regarding power lines and how to prevent accidents, or if involved in an accident the steps (or hops) to take to be clear of electrocution. It was a very good demonstration that can tailored for schools or any group.

Matt Wiebe has been the Wellington Municipal Airport Manager for nine years and is the only employee of the airport. He grew up in an aviation family and is a pilot and great mechanic. Fuel sales and land leases are the main sources of airport income. He said since we are middle America, it is an easy fuel stop for planes flying coast to coast. The airport has an agreement with Vance Air Force Base, conducting touch and go’s. Many businesses and individuals use and fly into Wellington Airport instead of into Wichita’s Dwight D. Eisenhower for the ease and convenience. Our airport has two courtesy cars, and is known for their customer service as well as lower fuel prices. Matt noted several past projects, including the runway expansion in 2018, and mentioned several future projects including new runway lighting and an above ground fuel system. These projects are funded by grants, FFA and KDOT. Each year Matt hosts several community and school events including the Young Eagles held recently. We have an impressive airport, that is open 24 hours a day, it is quite an asset for the size of our city. Great job, Matt!

One of our favorite recognitions was today, the Junior Lions Award ceremony at WHS.
We have some awesome juniors at Wellington High School and a selected group were recognized today as Junior Lions Award winners at an assembly. These students were chosen by their teachers, then the six boys and six girls chose one of their classmates as the plaque winner. These students were selected by their teachers because they exemplified the Lions Code of Ethics, showing strong character, loyalty, friendship, and respect for fellow students, teachers, school district employees and themselves. We were happy and honored to host them for lunch at our club meeting and learned more about each one of them. They are some very involved and nice young people! Congratulations to each one of them and we hope they are all Lions someday! 🦁
