Omar Portacarrero began Feeding the Hungry when he saw the need in Casa
Del Monte Mobile home community. This community has about 670 units and over 5000 people live there, including over 1000 kids.
The mission of Feeding the Hungry
“We seek to share the love of Jesus Christ by meeting the spiritual and physical needs of human beings deprived of nourishment and opportunities.”
Feeding the Hungry, Inc. has a unique niche in the alleviation of food insecurity as we go to the trailer parks and use the park’s club house to distribute food and also where we distribute clothes and anything else that we have available.
Feeding the Hungry distribute around 20,000 pounds of food weekly in six different locations and serve around 600 families and have 2 additional locations that they would like to add to the weekly distribution. We specialize in serving mobile home communities as most people who live in these communities suffer from food insecurity. Food pantries are often more than 3 miles away and most do not have transportation.
The ministry was able to start a tutoring program in partnership with Palm Beach Atlantic University as I saw a great need because of the inability of the parents being able to help their children with school work due to the language barrier. We have tutoring twice a week from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30p.m. and we had had success as many of the attendees had made the honor roll for the first time. We also have ESOL classes once a week and the residents received it with grateful hearts. We distribute about 4000 pounds of food every week and serve about 100 families or 500 people weekly. We are able to distribute furniture, clothes, toys, electronics, appliances, home goods, etc.We also distribute toys at Christmas and have a party for the kids and their families.
We have outreaches where we bring government and non government agencies to provide information about the many resources available to the residents of Casa del Monte and Palm Beach County.
For the future we envision having a main facility that can be the main storage place for food, clothing, toys and furniture to distribute to the different communities we serve. A refrigerated truck to pick up food from the big box stores is also a necessity we see in the future.
