Another voice on WesternAtlantic shark activity

We’re committed to keeping our local community informed and connected to the shark research happening right here in Atlantic Canada.

ASE’s Dr. Neil Hammerschlag will be presenting at the Yarmouth Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting on May 7 at the Rodd Grand Hotel. He’ll be sharing updates from our great white shark research and outreach efforts taking place off the coast of Yarmouth, with expeditions departing from Pubnico in late summer and early fall.

The event is open to the public—we’d be glad to have you join us if you’re interested and available. Breakfast is included with registration.

Sad development in SA.

We are saddened to report that our much loved Drone Project Coordinator, Anthony Anderson, A.K.A has officially resigned from Shark Watch SA, effective immediately.

The decision was made following ongoing bureaucracy in attempting to expand our drone shark spotting initiatives to help keep SA coastal water users safe. In his brief tenure as a volunteer at Shark Watch SA, Anthony helped drive our organisation to incredible new heights by forging alliances with SA surfing associations. Out of his own unpaid time, he also stepped up to coordinate drone operations at multiple state surfing competitions displaying the highest order of professionalism where his years of experience as a drone operator and government official shined brightly much to the appreciation of the SA public and contest organisers.

He is an amazing father, a great friend, and an incredibly knowledgeable and gifted person who will be dearly missed among the Shark Watch SA family. We wish him the very best with his future endeavours and offer him the utmost gratitude and support for his incredible work. Thanks, Ant. ❤️

Well, here is one known, proven proactive deterrent!!

What started as a peaceful swim turned into a moment of survival. Rob Hoey and his daughter were in the water off New Zealand’s North Island when a pod of dolphins suddenly surrounded them. The animals circled tightly. Every time the pair tried to swim away, the dolphins guided them back. Minutes later, the reason became clear. A nearly three-meter great white shark was nearby. The dolphins formed a living barrier. They slapped the water with their tails and moved fast to block the predator. For nearly forty minutes, they held their position. The shark eventually swam away. Only then did the dolphins disperse. The story is now spreading worldwide, leaving people stunned by animal intelligence and instinct. Many are calling it a reminder of nature’s quiet power. Sometimes protection comes from the place you least expect.
