As the warm weather arrives at Sprague, the children have been taking their learning and fun outdoors! From bug hunts and watching their handmade kites soar through the sky to helping care for our school grounds, they’ve been busy exploring, creating, and connecting with the world around them. Along the way, we’ve also been practicing one of our favorite outdoor lessons about living creatures: the 3 Ls—Look at it, Love it, Let it go

Spring is fully alive in the arboretum, and we are so lucky to explore it every day! Our Blue Room adventurers have been surrounded by beautiful blooming tress and flowers, while keeping an eye out for wildlife. So far, we’ve spotted fluffy goslings, sunbathing turtles, and a few snakes, and even made friends with some visiting sheep! These daily walks are filled with so much wonder, curiosity and fresh air.

This inspiring event brings together leaders in early childhood education and care for interactive sessions, engaging conversations, and powerful keynote speakers focused on strengthening programs, leadership, and advocacy across the field. We’re excited for the ideas, connections, and insights she’ll bring back to continue supporting high-quality early childhood education here at WCCC!

Makerspace continues to be one of the most exciting parts of the week at Schofield! With ever-changing materials and endless imagination, children are dreaming up incredible creations and bringing them to life. From dollhouses and theater stages to gumball machines, racetracks, cameras, and beyond, every creation tells a story of creativity, collaboration, and innovation. Whether working independently, with a partner, or as a team, our children are designing, building, problem-solving, and inspiring one another every step of the way. Watching their ideas come to life week after week has been nothing short of amazing!

Playing with balls, big or small, is a crucial developmental tool. It improves hand-eye coordination, improves gross and fine motor, and promotes social interaction like teamwork and turn taking. Ball play also supports cognitive growth and spatial awareness.
Here, some Purple Room children at the Early Childhood Program help pump up new balls for the playground.

From discovering local wildlife and creating colorful paper snakes to exploring the school grounds on exciting scavenger hunts, every visit sparked curiosity, creativity, and hands-on learning.
The children searched for creatures big and small, planted seeds, played interactive games, and embraced the joy of outdoor exploration every step of the way. We loved watching their excitement and enthusiasm grow with each session!

Spring has sprung in the Yellow Room these last few weeks! In addition to celebrating Earth Day with a special art project and a walk around campus to pick up trash and observe the beauty of the season, the children have been busy planting hostas on the playground, lettuce in our raised bed garden, and grass seed in individual pots. We can’t wait to watch it all grow!

This spring at Bates, the children have been buzzing with excitement thanks to special enrichment visits from Land’s Sake Farm! Each visit has brought curiosity, laughter, and plenty of smiles.

One unforgettable highlight? Meeting Missy the Duck! 🦆 The children loved learning all about ducks—their features, behaviors, and unique traits. As they spent time with Missy, their curiosity took off, sparking thoughtful questions like, “Why does she have webbed feet?”
