Since The Wellesley Community Center has held The Great Wellesley Train Show annually every November, they did not anticipate the level of excitement associated with the event, which brought in more than 2000 visitors in a single day. The Hub Division of the National Model Railroad Association Northeast Region - one of their sponsors - is largely responsible for the success of this highly anticipated event.

On Saturday, April 22, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the non-profit Hub Division hosted its annual SPRING TRAINing event. The day, which ran three tech seminars concurrently, was created for people who love or want to learn more about model trains and real rail-roading. The classes discussed electrical wiring and software controls, creating dioramas and laying out large complex track on hard mounted surfaces, kit construction and more. Stephen Priest, the keynote speaker and a Master Model Railroader expert, drew a very impressive crowd. The day was capped off with a delicious catered dinner in Henderson Hall for board members and others associated with The Hub Division.

The Hub Division was chartered on October 11, 1958 by the Northeastern Region of the National Model Railroad Association (NMRA). Hub is a nickname for the City of Boston, sometimes referred to as the “Hub city” of New England. The Hub Division serves the model railroad interests of NMRA members in central and eastern Massachusetts including Cape Cod.

At the 121st Boston Marathon, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society teamed up with Wellesley teamed up with Leukemia & Society, also known as Team in Training (TNT) for year number four and added in Wellesley’s own Geome software rollout. Marathon fans and passers-by gathered around the allure of savory burgers. The ‘TNT’ tent offered goodies and information on research and fundraising for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, based in Westchester County NY. The New England region is based here in Natick MA.

Visitors also had the chance to learn about the free iPhone application, Geome. It allows users to easily connect to essential components of their communities, including local organizations and government departments. The concept for "Wellesley, by Wellesley", a town-created mural and Geome’s first public initiative, was inspired by a movement known as placemaking. “Places are made by people, people are shaped by place…We hope the mural provides Wellesley locals a new way of visualizing the unique community they are a part of”, said Wellesley resident, Stacey Meeker, the founder of GEOME. You can take a look at Geome on www.geome.io

The public will have another opportunity to learn about Geome at the Wheels of Wellesley V on May 20. In the meantime, you can direct questions to [email protected].
