The 2022 Idaho State Fiddle Contest is pleased to announce the entertainment for Friday April 8th at 7:30 pm is the band:

Wilder

WILDER consists of bluegrass/country veterans Gary "Slim" Eller (guitar, banjo), Jay Fromlath (bass), and David Gerthung (mandolin). The trio is joined on occasion by a talented, experienced fourth musician. Wilder emphasizes the driving, hard-edged sound of pre-1970 bluegrass and pre-1970 country music. The band’s name was inspired by the town near Jay’s home along Snake River in Southwest Idaho.

On April 8 at Weiser, Wilder will be joined by well-known fiddler Rue Frisbee of Emmett. Years before the Weiser fiddle contest started in 1953, Rue was hearing old time fiddling being played by his father Dave and others such as the beloved Otis Howard. Competing in the years around 1970, Rue never finished out of the top five when competing against Weiser champions such as Byron Berline, Sammie Bush, and Loyd Wanzer. Rue will play a few tunes that he played in competition that are rarely, if ever, heard today

The 2022 Idaho State Fiddle Contest is pleased to announce that Dan Emert will be one of our sequestered judges.

Dan Emert has been playing the fiddle for over 40 years. He has placed highly in many contests around the West including the Oregon State, Washington State 2017 Adult Champion, Colorado state Adult Champion, the Northwest Regionals, Western Open Junior and Adult Champion, and two National Championships at the National Old-time Fiddler’s Contest in Weiser, Idaho (Junior in 1986 and Adult in 2006). Dan has been a clinical microbiologist for 25 years and currently resides in Walla Walla, Washington.
His philosophy on fiddling is straightforward. Technical proficiency including intonation and accuracy is extremely important, but even more essential is rhythm. As dance music, traditional fiddling must make your toes tap. You MUST find that groove to make it all work. He prefers a variety of different tunes in different styles like Texas-style, Scottish, Irish, and Swing. If it sounds good, it IS good. Play to your strengths and most importantly, HAVE FUN!!!! If you’re NOT having fun, you’re doing it wrong. Have a great time and best of luck to all of this year’s contestants.
