A question that I have been asked frequently (understandably) is: “what do the kids DO?”
These troops meet once weekly (usually taking breaks for Easter, summer and Christmas) for about 1.5 hrs. Each troop follows a set curriculum and leaders can decide which skill they wish to work on; there are so many to choose from! They can earn badges in different areas, ranging from outdoor skills to science & technology, to sports, to social interaction and leadership. Each week they will do things such a playing games, making crafts, and improving skills. Outside of weekly meetings, troops may also come together throughout the year for camp outs, “field trips,” ball games, and fundraisers 1-2 times a year. The troop that we were last in, spent the night at the USS Alabama and did some touring and other activities there. They went to a Biscuits ballgame last month as well as a camp out at one of the local state parks. Our last AHG troop recently did a mother-daughter tea party and the girls ALSO do fun camping trips ☺️
An example of a typical meeting: Trail Life will meet in one building; AHG will meet in another (or another large room of the facility). All ages will come together at the beginning of each meeting. The kids get to socialize for a bit, and then they get started. The troops present and post the colors, share announcements for their troops, have opening prayer and then disperse into their age groups. The groups then enjoy their activities for that week until about 15-20 minutes remain. Troops then finish up and reconvene with the rest of their troop. The troop will discuss what they did that evening, have a short devotional, then retiring of the colors and closing prayer.
