The rain stopped just in time for girl Scout Troop 64230 to pot 50 red oak seedlings. They'd 'scored' the bare-root plants from the New York State School Seedling Program. The seedlings will spend some time in the ReTree nursery growing bigger and stronger before they get planted in our Webster Open Spaces.

Where in Webster Trails?

Webster is blessed with some lovely waterfront, but this trail isn't on the lakefront. The sandy trail was formed by the glacial Lake Iroquois, formed when the St. Lawrence River was dammed by the last ice age more than 10,000 years ago. The sand is a benefit in the spring because it drains so quickly and rarely is muddy.

Have you walked on the seafloor of this ancient lake? Comment below to say where!

Friday is World Environment Day. FWT celebrates that year round.

Every Friday at 9am, volunteers gather to improve the habitat of Webster's preserves, removing invasive species, planting native trees and shrubs, and making sure we leave the world a bit better than we found it.

New this year, they also meet on select Wednesday evenings: June 17 and Aug. 5 at 7pm.

Join them once or every week, and make a difference in our small part of the world.

It's World Bicycle Day, and Webster's trails offer a range of options.

Find easy single-track at Finn Park.
Smooth, champagne gravel on the Hojack Trail.
Flat dirt at Bird Sanctuary.
And a more challenging mix can be found at Whiting Road Nature Preserve and Four Mile Creek Preserve.

Whatever you pick, keep the rubber-side down and a smile on your face.

These delicate yellow blossoms are all over Webster's preserves this time of year.
But we wish they weren't.

These are the flowers of Autumn Olive, an invasive shrub that can grow up to 20 feet tall, crowding out native plants. It also wages a war in the soil, where its roots change the soil chemistry, making it harder for other species to take root.

A single bush can produce 200,000 seeds each year, and a tiny broken branch can take root, producing another plant.

Eliminating this invasive is not realistic, but FWT is working to support native species in our preserves. Learnhttps://webstertrails.org/habitat-preservation-committee/
