There is a table like this one set in banquet halls, military ceremonies, and Legion posts all over the country. Most people walk past it without knowing what it means.

Every object on it stands for something.

The table is round, because our concern for them has no end. The cloth is white for the purity of their intentions. A single rose for the families who keep a light on. A ribbon for the answers they are still waiting for.

A slice of lemon for the bitterness of their fate.

Salt sprinkled on the plate for the tears of the families who wait.

A candle, lit, so they can find their way home.

The glass is inverted, because they cannot drink a toast with us tonight.

And the chair is empty. It has been empty for a very long time.

More than 80,000 American service members are still missing from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Cold War, and the Gulf Wars. Their families have spent decades in a grief with no ending, waiting on an answer that may never come.

Last year the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency brought 208 of them home. The most in the agency's history. They are still looking.

Today is National POW/MIA Recognition Day. The table stays set until every one of them is accounted for.

Missing, but never forgotten. 🇺🇸
