September is Hunger Action Month—a time dedicated to raising awareness about food insecurity and inspiring everyone to take action against hunger. According to the latest Feeding America statistics, more than 47 million people in the United States—including 1 in 5 children—face hunger each year. This ongoing crisis affects families and children right here in our own communities.

Bay Area Service League supports local students through our philanthropic programs Operation Support Our Schools and Snack Attack Packs. These programs provide nutritious snacks and essential food supplies to children and families in need, helping to ensure every student has the nourishment required to learn, grow, and succeed.

This September, join us in the fight against hunger. Whether you donate food, volunteer your time, or help spread the word, every action counts. Together, we can make a lasting difference and help create a hunger-free future for our community.

September is National Literacy Month, dedicated to promoting reading and writing for all ages. The goal is to build essential skills for academic and personal success. Activities such as reading aloud to children, donating books, volunteering, and engaging in language-rich interactions at home are encouraged to support early literacy.

Bay Area Service League’s philanthropic program Literacy for Life seeks to inspire a love of reading by distributing books and promoting literacy among children and their families.

With their newfound confidence in fashion, these students are ready to step into the classroom and focus on their educational journey.

Ready for School, the organization’s largest philanthropic program, has a profound impact on countless students across nine school districts, serving those from Pre-K through 12th grade.

Although in-store shopping is ending, the Shop & Deliver option is available for those with transportation challenges or who register later in the year.

Bay Area Service League members and volunteers at the Pasadena JCPenney store gave students the chance to choose fashionable outfits and accessories for the new school year through the Ready for School philanthropic program.

Each child left with increased confidence, prepared to start the year feeling positive about themselves.

Thanks to these volunteers' dedication, local students received new clothes and experienced the joy of self-expression and support.

Thank you to Priscilla Magnuson and her team of volunteers.

On Wednesday, August 26th, the Ready For School Shop & Deliver event at Baybrook Target was a great success.

Eight volunteers from LyondellBasell joined Bay Area Service League members and Target staff to support the event.

They completed clothing requests from students in several school districts, including new shoes, shirts, pants, and jackets.

They selected underwear and socks based on school dress codes and student preferences.

Each student also received a hygiene kit and books. Volunteers from the Bay Area Service League delivered the bags to the students’ campuses.

Our hope is the students feel the care and attention that went into preparing each bag.

We were delighted to shop and deliver for the students, and to meet our youngest participant, Miss Davidson. She celebrated her first birthday while helping her mother, Amy Davidson, shop.

LyondellBasell volunteers included Lisa Causey, Lisa Corrington, Amy Davidson and her daughter, Yvonne Dean, Lisa Dykman, Michelle Fuller, Sabrina Wood, and Marible Zepada.

Comments from the volunteers:
"It was a great experience with a lot of help and guidance, and I'll be taking part in this organization in the future!"

"I enjoyed helping to make kids' school year a success!"

"Thank you for the chance to take part in my community's volunteer work; it was a most rewarding experience."

*"I had a great experience, and it was nice to help the less fortunate. Thank you for the opportunity."

Galveston ISD's recent B accountability rating from the Texas Education Agency marks a meaningful step forward for the district — a 12‑point increase that reflects steady progress, hard work, and a commitment to students. This improvement shows what can happen when educators, families, and community partners stay focused on growth and opportunity.

Bay Area Service League congratulates Galveston ISD on this achievement. A stronger rating isn't just a number; it means students are feeling supported, teachers are making a real difference, and the district is heading in the right direction. It's great to see a community that genuinely invests in its students' success.

Getting to this point takes a lot of hard work, and Galveston ISD has really shown what's possible when everyone comes together. We're excited to celebrate this milestone and can't wait to see how the district continues to grow!

Every year on August 25th, National Secondhand Wardrobe Day invites people across the United States to shop and donate at thrift and consignment stores. These stores are places where great style meets a great cause.

That is exactly what our shop is all about.

Just ask Mona Farid, one of our Bay Area Service League members. She is always dressed to the nines. Most of her standout outfits came from our racks. This shows that secondhand doesn't mean second-best. It means being smart, sustainable, and stylish.

If you want to start building your own secondhand wardrobe, you can find stylish pieces like Mona’s at our shop.

Visit us at 100 E. NASA Parkway, Suite #80, in Webster on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

If you have items to donate, please bring them to Suite during regular shop hours. You may also bring donations on Tuesdays from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Secondhand Wardrobe Day reminds us that great style doesn’t have to be new; it just needs to be loved. We’re here to help you find your next favorite piece.

Bay Area Service League's Ready for School will conclude its in-person events at our three local JCPenney stores: Baybrook, League City, and Pasadena, this week and with a final event on Tuesday, September 1st.

It was rewarding to see so many students smile as they selected new school clothes and accessories and received hygiene kits. These experiences helped them begin the school year with confidence among their peers.

Our members contributed to every aspect of this initiative, from staffing and recordkeeping to collaborating with school districts. Their dedication made the effort truly rewarding.

Together, Bay Area Service League is changing lives, one person at a time.
