Rain or shine, the mission continues. 🇺🇸

Today, a dedicated group of volunteers spent hours in the rain hanging Webster County Hometown Heroes banners throughout town in preparation for Memorial Day.

These banners don't hang themselves. They require volunteers willing to give their time, climb ladders, work in less-than-perfect weather, and show up because honoring our veterans matters.

It's easy to notice what hasn't been done yet. It's a little harder to spend a rainy day helping make it happen. We're thankful for the volunteers who chose to show up.

While most people will only see the finished banners, these photos show the work behind the scenes and the dedication it takes to ensure our local heroes are honored and remembered.

We are always looking for volunteers. If you'd like to help with future banner projects, veteran initiatives, or community events, we'd love to have you join us. There is always room for another set of helping hands.

🇺🇸 Remember. Honor. Never Forget.

🇺🇸 Just in case you forgot why you have a three-day weekend…

This is it.

Not the barbecues. Not the beach trips. Not the sales.

This is the reason.

The folded flag. The final salute. The ultimate sacrifice so the rest of us could be free.

This Memorial Day, we honor the fallen.

We remember their names. And we never take this freedom for granted.

🇺🇸 A Message from the VFW Hometown Heroes Banner Committee 🇺🇸

As Memorial Day approaches, we have seen questions regarding the placement of Hometown Heroes banners throughout Webster Springs. We appreciate the community's passion for honoring our veterans and would like to share a little information about the program.

The veteran banners currently displayed around the courthouse were placed there because those poles were available to us, and we wanted our local heroes to be visible during Memorial Day weekend. The Main Street lamp posts are shared with the Main Street Committee and are not available for our use until Memorial Day. Once they become available, additional veteran banners will be installed.

The Hometown Heroes Banner Program is a volunteer-driven effort. Every banner that is ordered, organized, installed, maintained, and removed is made possible by volunteers donating their time for the benefit of our community and our veterans. Like many organizations, our volunteers balance jobs, family responsibilities, military commitments, and personal obligations while working to keep this program successful.

We ask for patience and understanding as we continue this important work. If you are passionate about honoring our veterans and would like to see even more accomplished, we would love to have your help. The reality is that community programs succeed when community members step forward to volunteer. Fresh hands, new ideas, and willing hearts are always welcome.

Rather than asking why something wasn't done, consider asking how you can help make it happen. Together, we can ensure our veterans receive the recognition they deserve.

Most importantly, we encourage everyone to remember the true meaning of Memorial Day-a time to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

We are proud to honor Webster County's heroes and grateful for the support shown by families, businesses, volunteers, and community members who help make this program possible.

Thank you for helping us keep the memories of our veterans alive. 🇺🇸❤️

We’ve been receiving a lot of messages asking about applications for this year’s Hometown Heroes banner display, so we wanted to share a quick update 🇺🇸

Our Hometown Heroes banner program runs on a 2-year display cycle. That means banners selected for the 2025 season will also remain in place for the 2026 season.

Because of this, we will not be accepting new applications this year. New applications will reopen for the next banner cycle following the conclusion of the 2026 season starting in January of 2027.

This process helps us manage the tremendous amount of work involved with designing, ordering, organizing, installing, maintaining, and storing the banners-while also allowing our community and visitors time to fully enjoy and recognize the heroes currently being honored throughout town.

We are incredibly proud of this program and appreciate the continued support, excitement, and interest from our community. 🇺🇸

Thank you for helping us honor our Hometown Heroes.

🇺🇸 It takes a village to honor our heroes. 🇺🇸

This morning, members of our VFW teamed up with our incredible JROTC students to begin placing the Webster County Hometown Heroes banners around courthouse square.

These banners represent more than names and photos- they are stories of service, sacrifice, and pride. Seeing our young people step up, climb ladders, and carefully place each banner with respect… that’s what community is all about.

We are proud to stand alongside the next generation as they help carry forward the responsibility of honoring those who served before them.

👏 Huge thank you to our JROTC students for your hard work, respect, and dedication.
👏 And thank you to our volunteers who continue to make this program possible year after year.

As you walk or drive through town, take a moment to look up…
❤️ Read the names
🇺🇸 Remember their service
🙏 And honor the sacrifice

This is Webster County. This is what we do.

It’s that time of year again… 🇺🇸

As we begin preparing to place our Hometown Heroes banners for the 2026 season, we can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of pride.

Each banner represents a story-a life of service, sacrifice, and dedication to our country. What many don’t see is the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes to make this program possible-from coordinating applications (January through April), to designing, ordering, mapping placements, and organizing installation. It truly takes a community effort!

But when those banners go up… it’s all worth it. Seeing our streets lined with the faces of our heroes is something truly special.

This year, we’re doing something a little different…
We thought we would begin hanging banners before Woodchoppers to give visitors a sneak peek of the transformation our town takes 🇺🇸
After Woodchoppers is over and in partnership with our wonderful folks from Main Street, we will finish hanging all of the banners throughout town.

This year is especially meaningful…
✨ This marks the second year these banners will proudly hang in our community.

We are honored to continue recognizing our Hometown Heroes. Stay tuned- banner placement is coming soon!

(Applications for the 2027 program will kick off January 1st and run through March 31st 2027)

We wanted to share a brief update regarding the memorial angel for Sarah Beckstrom that is placed at the memorial wall.

The placement of the angel was always intended as a temporary tribute within the Blue Star Memorial area, a meaningful space chosen to offer comfort and reflection while still allowing visitors full access to the memorial wall from all sides.

Recently, the statue was carefully removed so it can receive some attention and reinforcement to ensure it can continue to be displayed safely and respectfully. We are grateful for the love and thoughtfulness that went into creating this tribute.

Our priority remains preserving this space as one of remembrance, dignity, and peace as we continue honoring Sarah’s memory and all our fallen hero's together. 🕊️
