Mulberry Center Church, Saturday, September 27th, 2025, at 1:00pm proudly presents “Unconditional Surrender: A Visit with Ulysses S. Grant” which Pete J. Grady has written and will perform.
We meet Ulysses S. Grant in the final year of his life, as he is dying of throat cancer (brought on, no doubt, by his habit of smoking twenty ci**rs a day). Grant is penniless. His investment firm has gone bankrupt, and as he resigned from the military to serve as President of the United States, he has no military pension. Grant has been assured by Samuel L. Clemens that if Grant can complete his autobiography, the book will earn sufficient income to care for Grant’s family after his death. During the one-hour show Presenter Pete Grady explores Grant’s successes and failures in military and civilian life and provides the audience with a new understanding of Ulysses S. Grant, who was called “The Man Who Saved the Union.”

Tom Milligan, an Iowa actor, portrays Henry A. Wallace in a one-act play. This play, based on a book by Senator John C. Culver and John Hyde, explores “American Dreamer: The Life and Times of Henry A. Wallace,” a prominent figure in Iowa history who served as US Secretary of Agriculture, Vice President to Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Secretary of Commerce.

In the play, Milligan brings to life Wallace's story, highlighting his contributions as an agricultural innovator and founder of Pioneer Hi-Bred seed corn company. Wallace's legacy also includes his work in science, journalism, business, academics, and humanitarian efforts. The play, and Milligan's portrayal, delve into Wallace's vision for the future, including his controversial 1948 presidential campaign where he was labeled a Socialist.
