ART EXHIBITS
**Trinity County Visitor Center - (661 Main St.)will be featuring paintings from Kryss Sandstrom who's artwork has shifted from abstract realism into mystical surrealism with haunting reverence. The work has become darker, but not in a hopeless way. It carries mystery, emotion, haunted love, grief, honor, remembrance, strength, resilience, and rebirth. Animals appear often in their work become guardians, symbols, and emotional anchors within the painting.
**Main Street Gallery - (490 Main St.) The June Show is "Mountain Solstice" featuring artists Mary Severson and Diedra Malain. Our artists tell us, “June is the month of the summer solstice and the beginning of the high season in Northern California for enjoying the natural beauty of the area. This show is about a shared appreciation of the beauty of the landscape and a desire to share our impressions of that beauty with our viewers.
Mary Severson graduated from Iowa State University, with a B.S. in Applied Arts and has been creating art most of her life. Mary worked as a graphic artist for over twenty years and has been showing her paintings and winning awards in the Northern California and Southern Oregon area since moving here in the early eighties. She says “I’ve always been an artist, my mother having taught me in my early childhood. In coming to Northern California, I found the mountains speak to me of ages gone by and of the living earth. Rivers and lakes are my lifeblood and the wildlife, my children and our neighbors. I enjoy taking in the beauty through hiking, kayaking and canoeing, birding and photography. I try to relate my impression of the landscape through my art to my viewers and share the feeling of our outdoor experience.”
Diedra Malain studied art at UC Berkeley and graduated with a BA in studio art. Later she set up a pottery studio, first in Chico and then in Redding. Eventually she became an educator and taught in the Redding School District for 30 years. About six years ago she reconnected with painting, enrolling in painting classes from local artists. Living in Redding Diedra finds she is never short of inspiration and subject matter to paint. She might do a small plein air study where she can take in the light and colors of the landscape. She also takes reference photos to use back at the studio. Rather than producing a translation of the scene, she tries to capture the memorable parts that attracted her to that place, and the feeling she had while there. Diedra states, “Art is an internal conversation helping me discover who I am and what I love. My work invites the viewer in to have that same experience.”
**Highland Art Center - (691 Main St.)We are pleased to announce three new shows at the Highland Art Center for the month of June!
