Carole Sanders was a stewardess for American Airlines during the Viet Nam era. She volunteered for the Military Airlift Command (MAC) transport flights, carrying fresh-faced boys over to the conflict, and then back home, as she described their haggard faces returning, often sitting with them for the long flight home, listening to their stories if they wanted to talk, or just being quietly nearby. Carole worked on flights with ground fire on takeoff and landing in country, and somehow contracted a wicked staph infection, landing her grounded in a Viet Nam hospital for weeks. She was very proud of her service in MAC, and is included on the Viet Nam Memorial in Ranger, TX, the town where she grew up.

UPDATE: the Willis Library at University of North Texas in Denton, TX, now has the collection of Carole Sanders memorabilia available for viewing if anyone is interested in the actual artifacts...the collection ranges from 1962 in Carole's stewardess career and into the establishment of her lifetime sanctuary for dogs...the Carole Sanders Legacy of Love book of her own writings is also available for perusal at the library...nothing is digitized online as of this time...information about the collection can be found by simple search: Juanita Burgoon and Carole Sanders Collection (i would have prefered to have Carole's name first or only, but the collection was submitted after Carole's passing, so the donor's name appears first)
