After the PCHC gets through with participating in the parade, we will have our office open! Located on the historic downtown square, we will be right in the thick of things! So, make sure you walk, or two-step, your way over and enjoy an ice cold root beer,

And look for the Heritage Alliance Network float in the parade! Several members will be sitting on a hay bale! 🥳🤩

“How will we know it’s us without our past?”---John Steinbeck

On Saturday, May 30th, the Parker County Historical Commission closed out NATIONAL PRESERVATION MONTH with its recognition of those, past and present, who have played prominent roles in promoting, protecting and preserving our rich heritage in Parker County, Texas.

With family members, local dignitaries and representatives from other historical organizations throughout the County present, the PCHC remembered the lasting legacies of Mary Carnes Kemp, Virginia Cotten Scott and Jon Vandagriff.

Dr. Harold Lawrence was honored for his remarkable contributions to Parker County history which has spanned over five decades. Dr. Lawrence is the author of “Douglas Chandor: An English Artist and his Texas Garden,” about Chandor Gardens and its visionary creator, operates the unique Museum of the Americas and has written over two dozen successful historical marker applications regarding people and places connected to Parker County. His research for additional markers continues.

As part of the Inaugural Historian Awards event, the families graciously agreed to allow the PCHC to create a legacy room in remembrance and in honor of each recipient. The Legacy Rooms will be open, on designated days, at the historic Wright House at 202 West Oak in Weatherford. We will shortly post the dates and times the House will be open for you to visit, read about these remarkable preservationists, and see some of their lasting contributions. Do not miss this chance to engage with those in whose legacies you are now living. (Photos courtesy of Tony King, Tyra Brunz and Donna McCauley )

Memorial Day has a way of slowing the soul down for a moment.

Behind every memorial brick, folded flag, and engraved name is a story… a family… a sacrifice that altered generations.

As Texans, we are surrounded by places that quietly preserve those stories with dignity and honor…reminding us that freedom has always carried a cost.

Today, may we remember not only those who served, but those who never came home. 🇺🇸

This Memorial Day, we remember the many Texans who gave their lives in service to their country. Throughout the state, memorials and museums chronicle the stories of service members in every branch of the military.

The Memorial Courtyard, pictured here at the National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg, recognizes heroic contributions to the war effort in the Pacific. The Veterans’ Walk of Honor winds through the Courtyard, which is paved with bricks inscribed with additional tributes.

We honor their sacrifice by visiting these sacred places, sharing their stories, and reflecting on the freedoms they helped preserve.

*ATTENTION* Unfortunately, we've had to move this event. We apologize for any inconvenience. We are just as disappointed. But off and on rain, along with potential thunderstorms, don't mix well with a photography workshop and an art contest. We certainly hope that those planning to attend can regroup and mark their calendars for SATURDAY, JULY 25TH, to document this wonderful historic bridge that is soon to be lost forever. Thank YOU for your understanding and your support of historic structures, historic preservation and understanding the importance of history.
