Welcome to Engage! We are excited about this new mentorship program in Western Oklahoma! Below is some information about the program. If you have any questions, message us. We would also love for you to share this on your page!
From the Engage Program Director, Chris Walker, Juvenile Justice Specialist for OJA:
I have been working with youth and their families for nearly 20 years in various capacities. I feel my calling, or purpose in life, is to create a positive impact in the lives of the young people I have been charged to work with and to promote change where it is necessary.
In my childhood, no single factor (outside of my household) had a greater impact on the development of my world view than my involvement in athletic programs. The lessons I learned, not only from participating in athletic competition, but also from the relationships formed with the adult coaches, volunteers, and mentors, still impact my life to this day.
🏉About the program:
Engage is a mentoring program for at-risk youth in which Touch Rugby will be used as a vessel to cultivate the mentoring relationship. The adult mentors will be participating in the game of touch rugby alongside the youth participants. It is our vision that the youth who participate and successfully complete the 8-week program will have:
- Developed a positive relationship with at least one of the adult mentors
- Experienced the acceptance which comes from being a member of a team
- Adopted a sense of pride and self-confidence
- Received recognition for an accomplishment
- Discovered an effective anger management technique through physical activity
- Awakened ambitions to pursue other organized activities
We believe Touch Rugby is the perfect activity because it is virtually unheard of in western Oklahoma. Many of the juveniles whom we regularly encounter have grown disenchanted with the concept of organized sports. Simply put, if we were proposing to develop a program based on any of the traditional inter-scholastic sports, we would likely be facing an adverse response from many of those whom we hope will participate. Touch Rugby offers a “clean slate” to work from which is free of any predispositions that participating juveniles may have of organized sports.
