Muzzleloader season for deer opens on October 31st in al WMUs! ⚠️Hunters are reminded that deer must be registered in-person at check stations during the first two days of muzzleloader season, October 31 and November 1, as well as the first three days of the regular fi***rm season, November 11, 12, and 13. Online registration will be unavailable on these days.

🍂 Fallen leaves are natural. But where they end up matters!

As you tackle fall yard cleanup, remember that what happens on your property can affect the health of your favorite lake.

🍁 Protect lake water quality: Leaves naturally falling into lakes are part of the ecosystem. But blowing or piling leaves and other yard waste into the lake—or where they can wash into it—adds excess phosphorus that can fuel algae and potentially toxic cyanobacteria blooms.

⚖️ Know the new law: As of January 1, 2026, intentionally disposing of yard waste, including leaves and grass clippings, into New Hampshire’s surface waters is illegal.

🐝 Protect pollinators, too! Fallen leaves provide essential winter shelter for butterflies, moths, bees, and other beneficial insects. Leave some leaves in garden beds or natural areas, and wait until temperatures are consistently above 50°F in spring before cleaning them up.

🌿 Make your leaves work for you! Leave them on your lawn, spread them over garden beds, or move leaves from driveways and streets onto wooded areas before rain washes nutrients toward the lake.

Small, simple actions can make a big difference for healthy lakes and thriving wildlife!

The NHDES Dam Bureau has set its schedule for lowering the water levels of certain lakes and ponds controlled by State-owned dams for the season. Lake drawdowns are a great opportunity for property owners to conduct any necessary repairs to their waterfront property, provided they first secure a permit from the NHDES Wetlands Bureau. If you have questions about shoreland permitting, you can call the permitting team at (603) 271-2147.
