Hope Chest for Breast Cancer

Hope Chest for Breast Cancer Hope Chest for Breast Cancer provides emergency financial support to Minnesota breast cancer patients

After losing her two sisters to breast cancer, founder Barbara Hensley became painfully aware of the challenges faced by under-served women experiencing breast cancer. In addition to her sisters, brave and determined women inspired Barbara to embark on the important mission of Hope Chest for Breast Cancer®. Women like Nancy who Barbara met while she was accompanying her sister Patsy to the hospita

l for one of her chemotherapy treatments. Nancy’s three children sat at her feet during treatment because she could not afford childcare. The combined six year struggle of her sisters and situations like Nancy’s were devastating to Barbara – so she did something. In 2001, Barbara resigned her corporate executive position and founded the Hope Chest for Breast Cancer Foundation.

Cancer is an assault on the body, but for many women, breast cancer is also an assault on their womanhood: their self-identity. For this reason, the mental aspects of breast cancer – stress, depression, and fatigue – can be particularly debilitating. However, just as the disease itself is treatable with radiation therapy, chemo, and surgery, there is help for the mental problems associated with it.

A survey from the American Cancer Society found that 74% of cancer patients and survivors miss work due to their illness. Of those, 69% reported missing more than four weeks.

How would your time-off benefit handle an illness? When women are forced to miss work due to breast cancer treatments, they typically run through paid time off quickly. We are here to help the financial burden when grant recipients run out of paid time off. Want to learn more? https://hopechest.com/get-help/

“The grant enabled me to not stress about making my rent payment as a single mother after an unexpected expensive car repair. It allowed me to take a breath and focus on my loved ones and my health, instead of focusing on financial stress.

Your selfless donation to someone you don’t even know and likely never will, truly does make a significant difference.”
