Troop 370 has officially survived summer camp week at Camp Woodruff! 🏕️

And when we say “survived,” we mean merit badges were earned, skills were learned, slushies were consumed in medically questionable amounts, and somehow everyone made it home with most of their gear.

Our Scouts worked hard this week on merit badges like First Aid, Wilderness Survival, Animation, Horsemanship, Whitewater Rafting, Pottery, Astronomy, and many more. They also learned important life skills like swimming, fishing, safely using knives and axes, and starting campfires.

For five of our Scouts, this was their very first summer camp ever. For others, it was their first time being away from home for that long. They stepped out of their comfort zones, tried new things, learned new skills, and built memories that will stick with them for a long time.

We also attempted to eat 3 gallons of ice cream at the troop ice cream party.

Attempted.

Let the record show: the ice cream won. 🍦

They swam, fished, rafted, rode horses, made pottery, stared at the stars, practiced first aid, and learned how to be safer and more confident outdoors. They also proved that Scouts can run on camp food, sunshine, lake water, and enough slushies to fill a swimming pool.

Overall, Camp Woodruff was a huge success. We’re proud of every one of these Scouts for pushing themselves, helping each other, and making the most of the week.

A recent Washington Post article shared something many of us in Troop 370 have seen firsthand: spending time in nature is good for kids — not just physically, but mentally and emotionally too.

The article highlights research showing that time outdoors can help improve self-confidence, self-compassion, overall life satisfaction, and appreciation for who we are. That is exactly why Troop 370 works hard to keep our Scouts outdoors as much as possible.

When our Scouts are hiking, camping, cooking their own meals, filtering water, building fires, learning outdoor skills, serving the community, or just running around in the woods being kids, they are doing more than having fun. They are growing.

They are learning independence.
They are building confidence.
They are developing resilience.
They are working as a team.
They are discovering that they are capable of more than they thought.

In a world full of screens, stress, and constant distractions, the outdoors gives our Scouts room to breathe, think, explore, and grow. The science may be catching up, but Scouts have known this for a long time: the trail, the woods, the campfire, and the fresh air can shape a young person in ways nothing else can.

At Troop 370, we believe in keeping kids outdoors — because the outdoors helps build stronger Scouts, stronger leaders, and stronger futures.

A new study suggests spending time in nature may boost body appreciation, self-compassion and overall life satisfaction.

🏕️ Another great adventure in the books for Troop 370! 🥾

This weekend, our Scouts completed a 10.75-mile overnight backpacking trek through some of WNC’s most beautiful terrain. For several of our Scouts, it was their very first backpacking trip with the troop and they absolutely crushed it!

The Scouts carried everything they needed on their backs, cooked their own meals, filtered their own water, and proved they could be self-sufficient in the outdoors. Along the way they sharpened their camping and backpacking skills, observed wildlife, and enjoyed something that’s becoming harder and harder to find these days: the chance to simply be kids without electronics.

Our route took us across Black Balsam, Tennent Mountain, and Shining Rock as we searched for the legendary Shining Rock campground. (If anyone knows where it actually is, please let us know! 😂) Somehow we managed to dodge the rain all weekend, although one unfortunate shoe did lose a battle with the mud.

There were plenty of laughs, a spirited game of hide-and-seek in the forest, and memories that will last a lifetime.

Most importantly, we couldn’t be more proud of these young men. They stepped outside their comfort zones, worked together, embraced the challenges, and knocked it out of the park. Adventures like these build confidence, character, and friendships that last far beyond the trail.

It’s been a busy and meaningful weekend for Troop 370!

Our Scouts had the honor of helping the American Legion place crosses and American flags for Memorial Day in remembrance of the brave men and women who fought and gave their lives for our country. It was a humbling opportunity to serve and reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day.

We also attended Scout Night with the Asheville Tourists and had the privilege of serving as the flag detail during the National Anthem, presenting both the American flag and the POW/MIA flag on the baseball field. What an incredible experience and a moment our Scouts will never forget.

Proud of these young men for stepping up to serve the community, showing respect for our veterans and fallen heroes, and representing Troop 370 with pride and professionalism.

A huge thank you to the Waynesville American Legion Post 47 - Public Event & Happening for partnering with us and continuing to support Scouting and our youth.

Troop 370 was honored to be part of the opening ceremony color guard at the American Legion Ramp Festival.

One of our Scouts had the privilege of holding the American flag during the ceremony, a proud reminder that Scouting is about more than camping, adventure, and learning life skills. It is also about service, community, patriotism, and understanding what our flag represents.

We are grateful for the opportunity to stand alongside the American Legion as we honor the veterans and active-duty military members who have given so much for our country. Their service and sacrifice remind us why we teach our Scouts to respect the flag, serve others, and lead with gratitude.

Thank you to American Legion Post 47 for allowing Troop 370 to be part of such a meaningful tradition. 🇺🇸
