Today we honor Sergeant Devin A. Snyder, U.S. Army.
Sergeant Devin A. Snyder was born on August 7, 1990, in Virginia Beach, Virginia. At the age of 4, Snyder ran in a mile kid’s run and claimed the 1st place medal, all while wearing hiking boots. A natural athlete, she grew up playing soccer, running track, and even broke her school’s Steeplechase record in 2006. She graduated from high school in 2008 and joined the Army later that same year on August 11.
She was part of Company D, 787th Military Police Battalion as a Private (E-2) and graduated on January 15, 2009, receiving the certificate for exceptional achievement in obtaining a score of 297 on the Army Physical Fitness Test. Later, she would be named Solider of the Month at Fort Richardson, Anchorage, AK, and attended four promotion boards, winning two, with the ranks of PFC and Specialist. Devin deployed to Afghanistan in March 2011.
On June 4th, 2011, in Laghman Province, Afghanistan, Sergeant Snyder was killed in action. She died from wounds sustained in an improvised explosive device attack in which Specialist Robert L. Voakes Jr., Sergeant Joshua D. Powell, and Sergeant Christopher R. Bell were also killed. Sergeant Snyder was 20 years old.
Sergeant Snyder’s mother Dineen said of her daughter, “She gave 110 percent. She was somebody who never quit. Never. She always wanted bigger, better, and to do much more than she was already doing. I don’t know how it’s possible, but that’s how she was. She loved with her whole heart. I’m going to miss her a lot.”
Sergeant Devin A. Snyder is buried at Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, Cohocton, New York. We honor her service and sacrifice.
