Yesterday, we celebrated a very special milestone with Ashlyn at her home dedication!

Throughout her partnership with Haywood Habitat, Ashlyn has shown incredible resilience and dedication. Balancing overtime at work, motherhood, and all the ups and downs that come with building a home is no small feat, but she has met each challenge with grace and patience.

We are so proud of Ashlyn and all the hard work she has put into reaching this milestone. It’s a privilege to be part of her journey, and we can’t wait to see all the memories she and her family will make in their new home.

A Haywood County resident contacted Haywood Habitat for Humanity’s Critical Home Repair Program a couple of months ago, sharing that she was struggling to leave her home. Since the beginning of the year, she had only been able to leave five times, each for a doctor’s appointment. The steep steps leading out of her home had become increasingly difficult and dangerous to navigate, leaving her with limited access to the outside world.

Living on a fixed income, she simply could not afford to hire a crew to build a ramp that would provide a safer, more accessible way in and out of her home.

After completing the application, submitting the required documentation, and receiving approval for the program, Haywood Habitat staff and volunteers got to work. With careful planning, hard work, the team constructed a ramp that provided a more accessible entrance to her home.

At Haywood Habitat for Humanity, we believe everyone deserves a safe and accessible place to call home. Through our Critical Home Repair Program, we work alongside homeowners and volunteers to address essential repairs and accessibility challenges that can make daily life difficult.

Everyone deserves a decent place to live.

Today, Haywood Habitat joins the United Nations and Habitat for Humanity organizations around the world in recognizing World Habitat Day. This year’s focus, “Adequate Housing for All,” highlights the need for homes that are safe, affordable, accessible, and connected to essential services.

According to UN-Habitat, an estimated 2.8 billion people worldwide face some form of inadequate housing.

Here in Haywood County, we see how housing affects everyday life—from a family seeking an affordable home to a neighbor needing repairs to live safely and independently.

Through new home construction, critical repairs, accessibility improvements, and Hurricane Helene recovery efforts, Haywood Habitat works alongside homeowners, volunteers, donors, and community partners to address those needs locally.

This World Habitat Day, help turn awareness into action. Volunteer, give, or support our ReStore to help more neighbors have a safe, decent place to call home.

We are grateful to see Haywood Habitat for Humanity featured by the alongside organizations working toward hurricane Helene recovery across western North Carolina including and

Their latest announcement highlights 18 grant recipients, including Haywood Habitat supported through their Truist Foundation Western North Carolina Recovery and Resiliency Fund.

Our $275,000 grant will support home repairs and storm resistant improvements for Helene impacted households in Haywood County, helping neighbors remain safely in their homes.

Recovery takes a community. We’re proud to be part of the shared effort and thankful to Truist Foundation, The Center for Disaster Philanthropy, and the many organizations continuing to show up for Western North Carolina.

CDP announced the final round of grants from the Truist Foundation Western North Carolina Recovery and Resiliency Fund, totaling nearly $4 million.

Day 3: Haley’s Home

Today marks two years since Hurricane Helene. We remember the losses our neighbors experienced and the recovery work that continues across Haywood County.

Haley’s basement was flooding repeatedly, putting her home at risk of ongoing moisture problems and mold. Haywood Habitat installed a French drain to help move water away from the house and better protect it when it rains.

Some repairs are easy to see. Others do their work beneath the surface. Both matter to the people who call these houses home.

As we mark this anniversary, we’re grateful to everyone who continues to show up for their neighbors, one repair at a time.

Day 2: Joyce’s Home

Joyce’s home sits along the river in Haywood County and was severely flooded during Hurricane Helene. Joyce wanted to stay in her home, so she reached out to Haywood Habitat.

Her aging roof was actively leaking. When repairs began, most of the roof deck boards needed to be replaced. Through our partnership with Homes, Joyce received a new roof and ceiling repairs that help protect her home as she continues to recover.

As we approach the second anniversary of Helene, we’re sharing one Critical Home Repair each day. Joyce’s story is a reminder that recovery takes time and that having a safe home to return to matters.
