The Smoky Mountain Housing Partnership’s Self-Help Housing Program, a Division of Mountain Projects, celebrated another milestone on April 20th, with the placement of the first of three additional homes at its already successful Bethel Village project in Jonathan Creek.

A crew from Edwards Modular Edwards Modular Construction of Rutherfordton lifted the structure into place, and now finish work begins, with the homes’ owners helping complete that work.

⛏️ BALSAM EDGE GROUNDBREAKING ⛏️

Mountain Housing Opportunities, Inc. celebrated an exciting milestone today with the groundbreaking of Balsam Edge, its newest affordable housing community in Waynesville.

Located on a new five-acre site at 333 Howell Mill Road, Balsam Edge will be an 84-unit affordable apartment community and marks Mountain Housing Opportunities’ first affordable housing development in Haywood County.

Local leaders and community partners joined the celebration to mark the start of construction and recognize the importance of expanding affordable housing options in Haywood County.

MODULAR HOUSING INNOVATION — Today, Maggie Leftwich, our Affordable Housing Manager with Smoky Mountain Housing Partnership, presented at the Build Rural 2025 Conference in Washington, D.C.

Her session, “Streamlining Housing Through Modular Innovation,” highlights how communities like ours are rethinking the construction of affordable homes. 🏡

Drawing on a recent Mountain Projects pilot initiative, Maggie shared what worked, the challenges encountered, and how modular approaches can be tailored to meet local housing needs in Western North Carolina and beyond.

EMERGENCY FUNDS NEEDED

Mountain Projects is calling on the community to help meet urgent food needs while the government is shut down.

With SNAP benefits currently on hold and the Healthy Opportunities Pilot in limbo, many local working families and their children, older disabled adults, and the elderly living on limited incomes are struggling to afford groceries.

Mountain Projects serves 3,000 low-income people each month who need food support.

Our Food Assistance fund allows us to respond quickly—helping people put food on the table when other resources aren’t available.

If you are able to give, contribute to food assistance for residents of Haywood and Jackson Counties.
