Our sincere thanks to the Southeastern Greene School District Junior NHS kids, who raised funds to ensure their peers have the winter gear they will need later this year. They all asked great questions about charity, working animals, and the huge difference a few committed people are able to make. Greene County’s future is a bright one.

As Child Abuse Prevention Month comes to a close, the blue pinwheels will disappear from the Greene County Courthouse lawn, and it is important to remember what they represent. Every spinner is a reminder of a child and a family who came in contact with our county’s child-welfare system over the last year.

Most of these interactions were short, with issues being resolved quickly. Some stories went public because of their severity. Other cases are ongoing, still active after years of intervention. There were removals, court hearings, reunifications, placement changes, adoptions, and more.

Behind each and every pinwheel is a child and a family. There are caseworkers, judges, attorneys, foster parents, guardians ad litem, service providers, and court staff, all trying to do the right thing. There is no cheat code to win the game. This is not a job for artificial intelligence to do better. We serve as witness to the fear of the unknown that children try to hide, to the lawyers who fight to hold back tears when they cannot change the world, to the CYS worker pulling 18 hour shifts at a child’s hospital bedside, to the family that gets put back together, to the teenager who knows better than all of the old fogeys, and to the kid who gets a second chance in a new home.

The system is not perfect, but the people in it strive to make it better every day. Shielding children from trauma is our highest honor, and helping families thrive is our most ambitious goal.

Earlier this month, Greene County Prison inmates challenged the facility’s warden and support staff to match their charitable donations. We are proud to be selected as the beneficiary of their good-natured competition, and we are reminded that Greene County is a place like no other.

Another year of records shattered as we close out the 2026 GREENE COUNTY DODGEBALL TOURNAMENT. Last Saturday, 23 teams left everything they had out on the field in support of our mission to protect Greene County's most important resource: its children. The Rockets Launching Leadership class from Jefferson-Morgan School District visited the office today to discuss the importance of our child-welfare programming and to donate their handmade foster care comfort bags. True leaders challenge themselves to reach higher and question the status quo.

PROJECT BALLOON has officially launched!! No child should feel alone or scared when they stay in the hospital, but we’ve seen several Greene County foster kids face those challenges in the last two years. With this program now in place, thanks to help from our amazing friends at First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Greene County and WVU Medicine Golisano Children's, any child can have a personalized balloon and a get-well card delivered to their bedside in minutes.

In 2024, Greene County kids accounted for the third highest number of outpatient visits and the sixth highest number of inpatient visits to WVU Children’s. Project Balloon will serve not only our county’s kids but all kids in need across a four-state region. Shielding children from trauma is our highest honor.
