This past weekend, the Samuel H. Powe SCV Camp 255 hosted their annual Nathan Bedford Forrest Birthday Celebration and Recruitment Barbecue. After a great barbecue meal, Mississippi Division Commander and Past Camp Commander Forrest S. Daws swore in the Camp’s new officers. As part of the event, newly elected Camp Commander Harrison F. Daws presented this year’s Camp Awards. Forrest S. Daws received the Dr. Thomas S. West Compatriot of the Year Award, while Greg Johnson received the W.S. Davis Lifetime Achievement Award. Additionally, Past Camp Commander Daws received his 25 year Service Medal for 25 years of service in the SCV. The Camp was also presented with their flag streamer for being selected as Small Camp of the Year in the Mississippi Division. Good things are happening in Wayne County! Several new ideas were discussed throughout the evening and the Camp shared excitement about the future.

On July 2, 1863, the men of the Wayne Rifles took place in Barksdale’s famous charge at Gettysburg. They were narrowly denied victory that fateful day, but history granted them glorious immortality. Deo Vindice!

Today is Confederate Memorial Day in Mississippi. Yesterday, a few members of the Samuel H. Powe SCV Camp 255 gathered at the grave of Lt. W.S. Davis in the Waynesboro City Cemetery to hold their annual memorial service. Over 250 Confederate Veterans are buried in Wayne County, but many more than that from Wayne County served. They are buried as far north as New Jersey and as far west as Texas. Unfortunately, the final resting place of many are known only to God. They fought to defend hearth and home. Yesterday, today, and everyday, we remember.

The Samuel H. Powe Camp 255 had our March meeting last week, and it was a great night! The Camp received our certificate and streamer for the 21st Century Confederate Heroes. We are proud and honored to do our part to help retire the debt of the National Confederate Museum and rebuild the Forrest Plaza! Additionally, Compatriot Bobby Boyles received his medal for 25 years of service to the SCV and we welcomed our newest member Compatriot Billy Stevens. It’s been a banner year for the Camp and we are excited about the future!

Our Camp’s namesake, Captain Samuel H. Powe, led “The Wayne Rifles” Company B of the 13th Mississippi. They fought under this valiant banner, which was recently preserved by the Mississippi Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Happy Confederate Flag Day!

They weren’t ashamed, they were proud. That’s how we should be too.

They weren’t ashamed, they were proud. That’s how we should be too.

I have been ashamed of many things in my life, but the recollection of my course as a Confederate soldier has been for forty years, my chief joy and pride! If ever I was fit to live or willing to die, if ever I was worthy of my father's name or my mother's blood, if ever I was pleased with my place, suited to my rank, or satisfied with my sinful self—it must have been whilst I was marching under that white-starred cross upon that blood-red banner against the invaders of my native Southland. For that I want no forgiveness in this world or the next. I can adopt the saying of my great Commander, General Lee: "If all were to be done over again, I should act in precisely the same manner; I could have taken no other course without dishonor." -- John Richard Deering, Company K, 12th Mississippi Infantry
