The National branch of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) was founded on Feb. 12, 1909. This organization was founded as a response to a race riot in Springfield, IL in 1908. A multi-racial group of Northerners came together and founded the NAACP as a response to said riot and to promote social equality for the disenfranchised.
