South River Watershed Coalition

South River Watershed Coalition We seek to inspire and facilitate action to protect our watershed.

The South River Science Team was established in 2001 to serve as a focal point for technical issues associated with mercury in the South River and downstream waterways. Our goal is to understand why mercury in South River fish has not decreased over time and identify potential solutions to improve the situation. The team is a cooperative effort between the Virginia Department of Environmental Qual

ity; the Department of Health; the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries; and representatives from academia, citizen groups, the Environmental Protection Agency and DuPont. We provide technical direction for mercury studies, investigations, and monitoring and ensure that there is effective communication provided to people who use the river.

What towns and parks are part of the South River Watershed?

From Greenville in southeastern Augusta County to Grottoes in northeastern Augusta County, our South River flows north in Augusta County to join Virginia’s South Fork of the Shenandoah River. The South River watershed includes the communities of Waynesboro, Stuarts Draft, Crimora and several other towns and villages that rely on the river as a water supply for their citizens and industries. Shenandoah National Park, Sherando Lake, Grand Caverns, and many other public parks provide abundant outdoor recreational opportunities throughout our watershed.
