🗣️Masking refers to the tendency to hide or suppress one’s true self to cope with challenging circumstances. Many survivors develop a need to mask as a survival strategy or a way to protect themselves from further harm. It is important to recognize that masking looks different for everyone and all survivors deal with trauma differently.

Masking involves:
⚠️Presenting a false self
⚠️ Hiding vulnerabilities
⚠️ Hiding emotions

Yesterday, Myah was invited to speak at First Presbyterian Church in Wayne for their community baby shower. The members of the church came together, listened to speakers, played baby shower games, and collected an assortment of baby supplies to donate to both Haven House and the Northeast Nebraska Public Health Department. Thank you for hosting such a great event and allowing us to speak at it!

👩‍🏫 What can safety planning with children look like? Children exposed to violence in the home may experience a range of emotions and may not know what to do in the moment. It is important to help them identify:
❔ Who is and is not a safe adult
❔ Where a safe place to go is
❔ Who they can tell if they are being hurt
❔ Who to call for help
❔ Emergency contacts (911) and other phone numbers of safe adults!

🎉 Happy Work Anniversary, Myah 🎉

Today we celebrate Myah’s three years of dedication and diligent work at Haven House. Myah first joined our team in May 2023 as an intern. Following her graduation, she became a permanent Advocate that August, and in January 2024, she transitioned into the Criminal Justice Liaison position.

From day one, Myah has demonstrated compassion for survivors and a commitment to advocacy. That passion continues to be a driving force in the work she does and in the way she supports Haven House’s mission. In her role as Criminal Justice Liaison, Myah has been influential in strengthening connections between community officials, service providers, and Haven House. Through these relationships, she helps ensure that survivors are better supported and have access to the care and resources they deserve. Myah’s dedication makes a meaningful difference to everyone she encounters. She is a constant source of support, compassion, and encouragement.

We are grateful for Myah’s three years of service, advocacy, and dedication to survivors. Thank you for all that you do, Myah! 💜

This week, we had the pleasure to send Janet and Amber to the National Sexual Assault Conference in Washington D.C.! We are so grateful to the Nebraska Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence for giving us the opportunity to send two of our advocates! During the conference, they got to make meaningful connections, listen to impactful speeches, and enhance their advocacy skills. We are so proud that we got to represent Haven House at the national level and learn more to better our services for survivors! 🏛️🩵

💜Thankful Thursday: Wayne Kiwanis Club 💜

Thank you to the Wayne Kiwanis Club for donating 30 comfort kits for staff to give out to the youth we serve! This was possible through a grant from our Kiwanis district: Nebraska-Iowa Kiwanis Mental Health Grants. These kits include a blanket and a small activity for the child to do. We are happy to distribute these items back into our community, and we are confident that these kits will bring a smile to many! Thank you!

Earlier this week, our advocates, Jenny and Hattie, had the pleasure of hosting a table at the resource fair hosted by the Siouxland Coalition to End Homelessness. We provided valuable information to those in the community, connected with resource partners in the area, and provided lots of goodies for the clients. Thank you to the Siouxland Coalition for inviting us and making this resource fair event great!💜
