Suh, Ann. “Brief Chat with WAFAA.” 13 Nov. 2021. Brochure
Women and Families Ascending Organization (W.A.F.A.A.). Website
“Women And Families Ascending Association (W.A.F.A.A).” About, 5 Jan. 2021,
https://www.wafaaorganization.org/. Provide a brief description of the agency. Include the name of the agency, Is your field work placement part of a larger agency?
♦ The name of the agency is Women and Families Ascending Organization. It is a small, nonprofit organization dedicated to helping women and families in need of food, housing, counseling, legal services, career development, etc. It is an independent organization founded by licensed certified social worker, Wafaa Saad. What specific needs does the agency attempt to meet? What are the auspices of the agency?
♦ W.A.F.A.A.’s goal is to help families or individuals through various social programs to clients of all cultural backgrounds. Many clients come in speaking Spanish and Arabic, and we provide translation, immigration, and legal services. We also distribute food and provide affordable housing for women who are displaced or simply need a place to stay. There is a nightly charge, but it can be covered by governing agencies and various religious organizations. We encourage women to work and self-sustain while getting the help they need. Roughly how many people does the organization serve (tens, hundreds, thousands)? What are the demographics (age, s*x, social economic status, ethnicity) of the population(s) served?
♦ We serve thousands of men, women, and families of all ages. We provide diapers, wipes, and food. We give to the elderly and provide kitchen stuff for families in need. We help both men and women. We help everyone but women and children more. We help everyone of every social economic status in cases such as that of domestic violence. The victims of domestic violence have a wide range of demographics. When we provide food, clothes, and money (including rent), we are servicing the poor. The clients’ demographics depend on each case. The ethnicities are a mix of everyone. It’s almost about 30% Latino and 30% African American, and the other 40% is white or other. How do clients initially learn about the agency (i.., referrals, commercials, word of mouth)? Are the clients voluntary or involuntary (court-ordered)? How are clients treated by the agency?
♦Our clients learn about the agency through referrals, commercials, and word of mouth. We reach out to municipal courts who share our brochures. We may also develop partnerships with organizations who make referrals. Some of our clients are court-ordered, as we treat all our clients equally, with dignity and respect. Regardless of religion or color or their background or economic status, we provide our services free of judgement. What is the agency’s written policy for handling its clients’ confidential information (be specific)? Under what circumstances can confidentiality be breached? Clients must agree that any information verbally or physically conveyed to Ms. Wafaa in regard to any matter involving any clients may not be disclosed to any parties other than those agreed upon by any persons concerning that matter. However, our social worker is obligated to pursue professional help in the case of any communication regarding self endangerment, physical past, or present engagement inflicted upon the undersigned (2) by any potential abusers, or harm and unfit well being to any child(ren) under legal supervision to the undersigned (2), if brought to Ms. Wafaa’s attention. What kind of neighborhood is the agency located in? How close are the nearest bus stop and/or other public transportation? Is the agency wheelchair accessible?
♦ The neighborhood is exceptionally nice. It’s a commercial area that has commercial buildings that are accessible to the public. The buildings are on a main road next to many bus stops. There is one in front of the building. There are many around the neighborhood, but unfortunately, our office is not wheelchair accessible. You will find doctors, lawyers, and other nonprofit organizations nearby. The office is not for public use. What are the eligibility criteria for clients? Do the agency clients have to pay any fees?
♦ As long as potential clients have paperwork from the Department of Children and Families or social services, they may make full use of our services—upon intake. The cost and fees depend on the clients’ income. If our clients are employed, there are costs and fees associated with our services. What is the role of the social worker in the agency? Is this a primary or host setting for social work? How are the social workers treated by the other workers in the agency? What did you do at the agency? Describe your activities. What client populations did you work with?
♦ The social worker within the agency performs follow ups, case management, treatment plans, and supervision. W.A.F.A.A. is both a primary and host setting. All social workers working under the W.A.F.A.A. Organization are treated with respect from volunteers and all other members of the organization. At the organization, I…
