From humble beginnings of about 25 students over 15 years ago, Champions grew to serve hundreds of students and mentors at Wayne Memorial High School. The program has been successful in helping the school culture move from a place of academic indifference to one where students strive to reach new academic goals. With the cultural change now part of the fabric of WMHS, there are new priorities for serving the youth of Wayne and WMHS service area.
In recent weeks, we have announced an exciting new direction for Champions of Wayne with the launch of the Champions of Wayne Youth Fund, a donor-advised fund established at the Community Foundation of Monroe County to continue serving youth in the Wayne Memorial High School community.
The move to a more nimble, dynamic fund will allow support to students in relevant ways through organizations best positioned to offer focused services.
The new fund has been given a seed grant by the Helppie Family Charitable Foundation. Consider a donation at thttps://tinyurl.com/55xj27b7. The fiduciary for the fund is the Community Foundation of Monroe County, whose Executive Director is Wayne native and former WMHS Principal,Valerie Orr. You are also able to support the fund by mailing donations directly to the Community Foundation of Monroe County, c/o Champions of Wayne Youth, 9 Washington St. Monroe, MI 48161.
