BSA Troop 101

BSA Troop 101 Welcome to the FB page of BSA Troop 101 of Wayne, NJ! Welcoming all former, current and future members!

The story of Troop 101 goes back to 1934 when we were founded - which makes it a long one, but we can give you the basics:

• We meet every Friday night, from 7:30-9:15pm, at the United Methodist Church on Parish Drive in Wayne, NJ.

• Our schedule matches the Wayne School Calendar.

• We camp once a month from September to June, from Friday night to Sunday morning. Most times we are in tents, but

we do spend some trips in cabins, or simple sleeping under the stars!

• Plenty of opportunities for Mom, Dad, sister, brother or your uncle's cousin to come down and be anything from a troop committee member to just coming on a trip or two!

• We travel around the NJ tri-state area, venturing as far as Washington D.C., Gettysburg, PA and Boston, MA.

• We have family trips - skiing, canoeing and if you want to take the ride, you can go on the trips listed above

• Learn to cook, pack, do laundry, solve problems, over come obstacles, leadership skills, and much, much more. Most of the time your son won't know he's even learning the skills! They last a lifetime and are looked for by colleges and corporations in the future.

• Get them off the couch, and outside!

Summer badges? Getting picked.
Advancement? In progress.

And yes…we DO play, thats literally how we hit our goals. Work hard, play harder, earn it all.

Catch us leveling up all summer long.

This is it. This is the last photo I may ever take at Camp Turrell, a place I considered sacred. Scouts, out in the forest, having the time of their lives.

Laughing. No phones. No TV. No devices. No screens. Just fun.

The first time I set foot on this sacred ground was in 1990 as a Webelo, in the fall as one of our final outings as Cub Scouts. I remember how my father borrowed a canvas wall tent from a friend, which was the same as what I would live in as a Scout at summer camp. How my friend's father was too tall for their dome tent and you could see his feet almost bursting out of the nylon.

For 33 years I was on that property either for summer camp or for a weekend trip - 8 as a youth, and 26 as an adult leader, 4 summers as a staff member. I nearly drowned putting foam under the dock - I learned construction at 15 building the archery pavilion.

That has now come to an end. NNJC has decided to sell the property. To be honest, I hope that there is an issue, and they can't sell, or they never get the asking price because what they need and what they will get are vastly different numbers.

A small ray of hope in a perfect storm at sea.

In another thread on here, I saw someone state that we shouldn't blame the council, but the executive board, or how it was the payouts from National going bankrupt, or a drop in numbers from COVID-19. It's mismanagement, egos, short-sightedness, bankruptcy, and much more.

It is a group of people running a youth program and forgetting why they are doing it in the first place. When I was a youth, you never saw a picture of a council employee without their uniform on; now, I see 99% in business suits.

Usually, it is cheaper for us to go to in-council camps - now, our council has jacked up the price so much that it's cheaper to go out of council.

Am I emotional? Yes, I have been having so many emotions that I do not know what to even call it. I was looking forward to sharing the stage at the closing campfire, Week 4, 2026 with my daughter.

Little did I know that the closing campfire, Week 4, 2025 would be the last I would participate in, let alone MC.

So, if you have $4M lying around, or know how to raise the money, let me know. The greatest revenge for me would be to have Troop 101 Eagles get together, buy the property, and make it the most profitable camp in the US.

Thanks for letting me rant. Sorry, there are no other updates - though I do have lots of pictures.

I'm a bit late with this one, but here is a photo dump from our Halloween Party! Everyone got dressed up as something, we watched a little bit of Goosebumps, carved pumpkins and of course - ate candy!

Why do these pictures look a little weird? Well, the SM had a good camera, so he decided to go as PAPPARAZZI! So, small lens, bright flash, and - voila! - pictures that look like they belong in the tabloids! The best part - he kept asking questions about the accusations and any comments on this or that story.

One of the best Halloween Parties we've had in a while!

After all that, we still had to go back and cook dinner - without a campfire. Since we've been having so many adults joining us lately, we've split so that the Scouts and adults each cook for themselves. So, you get two-for-one!

At this point, they weren't really happy. We came down from the ruins, and had to climb back up a pretty steep incline (and this was the easy way back to the site). As you can see, we all look tired and hot, and you'd be right in guessing that.
..and we had another 4 miles to get back to the camp.

Then there is this one, who looks like he should be sitting on a stoop somewhere in Brooklyn throwing dice.

A very thankful shout-out to all of the Veterans in our lives. Thank you!

I'm pretty sure that the girls watch me like hawks when I have a camera in my hand so that I don't catch them at less than their best. This one always poses like she will be in Vogue, while one of the others always turns or covers her face when the lens is in her direction.

The boys on the other hand, don't seem to really care since I frequently catch them with food in their mouths, or yawning or some other... natural scene.

The ruins were a great spot to relax in the shade and (sort of) cool off. Here is one of our two Cub Scouts having lunch with dad.

This is the view from the same spot off to the southeast (I think).Happy Cappucino Day!
