Hey - composers...in case you happen to have the two weeks between July 19 and Aug. 2, 2026, available for something kind of awesome & singular, here is an invitation to apply to the Composers Conference for our 82nd year of new music magic in the making!

It's free to apply. It's free to attend. People seem to love it a lot. We've got tremendous musicians to work with. We've got tremendous Guest Composers this summer - Patricia Alessandrini & Jeffrey Mumford. The food is great. And we're at a place like no other in New Hampshire...Avaloch Farm Music Institute.

Application information is below. Very straightforward. Very clear. Very legible & fair. Please spread the word. Please apply - everyone, and anyone - please apply!! We make our best effort so that the Conference grows and changes year to year, and remains as open as possible to as many different voices as possible.

Composer Michelle Green Willner recently posted to FB: “A huge congrats to violinist Matthew Hakkarainen who recently joined the Toronto Symphony Orchestra as Associate Concertmaster! So very proud of him and his talent!! Matthew and I collaborated on the Composers Conference commission of Kochavim/Stars and I‘m very excited about our continued collaboration based on a series of paintings featuring stars. Please view Kochavim/Stars on YT: https://youtu.be/-JUzj07trrE?si=myH47xRBE-NHyEYL

A native of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, Matthew completed his musical studies at the Curtis Institute of Music (B.M. ‘22) and the Juilliard School (M.M. ‘24), where he studied with Pamela Frank, Sylvia Rosenberg, and Ronald Copes. He is an alumnus of the Rebanks Fellowship Program (‘25) at the Royal Conservatory of Music’s Glenn Gould School. His additional mentors have included Barry Shiffman, Charles Castleman, Mauricio F**s, and Borislava Iltcheva, as well as his earliest teachers, Huifang Chen and Maree Sawhney.”

What wonderful news! Congratulations Matthew & best wishes on this marvelous new musical chapter of your life, and thank you Michelle for your spectacular piece and for sharing this splendid news! The Conference's 80th Anniversary Community Commissions continue to reward our field in so many different ways, and we are happy to share any news about the ongoing life of your Community Commission projects – send your stories our way!

Composer Margaret Brower (Conference Guest Composer, 2002) was commissioned by Artistic Director Kurt Rohde to write a one-minute duet for Conference Ensemble bassoonist Adrian Morejon & violist Louise Schulman as part of the Conference's 80th Anniversary Community Commissions.

Brower's "Disappearing Act for Bassoon and Viola" has subsequently evolved into a larger work titled "Duo for Bassoon and Viola." Here is a wonderful performance featuring Emma Plehal (bassoon) and Kelsey Farr (viola) playing Brower's thrilling new (& complete!) duo in full.

The Conference is extremely excited to hear about any of our 80th Anniversary Community Commissions afterlife! If a composer or performer of any of the 50+ new works commissioned as part of the Community Commissions Initiative have news to share about these works, please let us know by emailing us on our website's contact page: https://www.composersconference.org/contact-us

In the meantime, enjoy this performance of Margaret Brower's "Duo for Bassoon and Viola." And congratulations Margaret!
