Have you ever wondered why you’re seeing a Plainwell EMS unit at your home or in your neighborhood?

It is commonplace for one agency to provide “coverage” for another when none of their ambulances are available. For example, Wayland EMS and Plainwell EMS regularly provide coverage for each other in this situation.

We are grateful for our partnerships (sometimes known as “mutual aid agreements”) with all of our neighboring EMS agencies!

This ensures that no matter how busy the day is, help is on the way for you if you need it!

Did you know that in addition to always having at least two ambulances staffed in Wayland, that there is also a third ambulance running out of Dorr?

Our “A Area” truck is in service at “Dorr Base” most weekdays in the late afternoons/evenings, and during daytime hours on Saturdays and Sundays. The “A” truck helps us decrease response times to parts of Leighton, Dorr, and Hopkins Townships, as well as all of Salem and Monterey Townships.

“24 hour shifts? When do you all sleep?”

This is a common question our crews get. As you can see, our old BuckleBear mascot is tucked in one of the four bedrooms that we have at Wayland Base. When our crews arrive at work they essentially “move in” to their new home for 24 hours. We have a kitchen, sitting area, and beds so that we can try to get some rest (although last night our Wayland crews were dispatched to five calls after 9PM).

Great guesses yesterday! At the time of this post your WAEMS crews have responded to 2,649 calls so far in 2026!

Do you ever wonder what your Wayland EMS crews do on the weekends (when the boss is gone)? In between running calls we double check that all of our battery-powered equipment on the ambulance is charged and ready to serve our community!

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our 50th Anniversary Celebration Open House! We got to see community members, old faces from the WAEMS family, and many of our current crew members spent time together as well. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve those within our response area and beyond, and our crews are grateful to be eating LOTS of leftover hot dogs!

Cleaning and decoration preparation for THIS Friday's open house has begun!!! We are looking for to seeing everyone August 21 4p-7p. There will be goodie bags, hot dogs, chips, beverages and of course cake! Make sure you stop in to say Hi, see how uniforms, equipment and EMS in general has changed over the past 50yrs 😁
