Talking about death won’t make it happen sooner, and staying silent won’t hold it back.

I am not ready to go yet, I have so much more living to do, but working in this field has opened my eyes to how fragile life is. It has helped me to lay down my past guilt and regret, and hold tightly to what really matters which is being fully present in mylife and living it the very best way I possibly can.

My hope for myself, for you, for all of us, is that when that time does come, we are cared for, supported, and remembered in a way that truly honors us.

I don’t want someone else choosing how I am cared for, who sits at my bedside, what music is being played, or how I am celebrated after I die. I want this done my way. I have everything in writing down to my 12-hour playlist of music that takes me back through my entire life.

I want my people to know what matters most to me. I also don’t want to put them in the position of having to make decisions on my behalf, which could leave them wondering if they honored me well.

When my brother died, I sat alone at the funeral home, guessing at what he would have wanted. I did my best, but I still wonder if I got it right.

Please talk to your people. Write it down. Make sure those you love aren’t left guessing when the time comes. Talking about it won’t change the ending, it just lets your wishes be known so that your life can be honored in the way you want it to be.

I offer a class that focuses on helping you design your own end-of-life plan, it’s called “Your End of Life Wishes,” and can be found on my website.

People mean well.

They offer advice.

They tell you how strong you are.

They say things like “they’d want you to be happy,” or “at least they’re not suffering.”

They talk about closure. About moving on. About staying positive.

But here’s the thing—

Until you’ve sat in the front row at a funeral…

Until you’ve looked at a casket and felt like the world cracked open…

Until you’ve had to stand there and say goodbye when you weren’t ready—

You don’t really know.

You don’t know how grief rearranges every part of you.

You don’t know how long the silence lasts after everyone else goes back to normal.

You don’t know what it’s like to carry someone in your heart because you can no longer carry them in your life.

So, if you haven’t been there yet, I’m truly glad.

I hope that day doesn’t come for you for a very, very long time.

But please—

Don’t tell me how I should be grieving.

Don’t tell me what joy should look like right now.

Just sit with me. Walk beside me.

Or let me be.

Because unless you’ve sat in the front row…

You don’t get to hold the mic.

If these words connected with you, you’ll find many more like them in What Remains. It’s a collection of the writings I’ve shared over the years, bringing together reflections on grief, love, loss, and the connections that continue long after someone is gone.

I hope it brings you comfort, understanding, and the reminder that you're not alone.

We are honored to be partnered with such an amazing hospice team! As a social model hospice home we are able to provide exceptional service by our partnership with the Medical Hospice! We are lucky to have one of the best in the nation!

National recognition. Exceptional care. Local voices.
💙💛🧡

We’re proud to share that CareFirstNY has been named a 2026 Hospice CAHPS Honors recipient, earning national recognition as a high-performing hospice agency based on feedback from the families and caregivers we have the privilege of serving.

And while this honor carries our name, it belongs to the people who make that care possible every day: our nurses, social workers, spiritual care counselors, physicians, volunteers, and support staff who show up with compassion, expertise, and heart.

We’re grateful to our team—and to every family who trusts us with their care.
