It's time for another Satilla Species Spotlight! This week, we're shining light on the Persian Silk Tree; also known as the Mimosa.
You've probably seen this tree's striking pink flowers in a neighbor's yard or along the highway. While the Mimosa is beautiful to look at, this plant is highly invasive in the United States, especially here in the Southeast.
It can grow up to 5 feet in a single growing cycle and often outcompetes our native plants for water, light, and nutrients!

It's Fun Fact Friday!

Fact: Even though the watershed has received a few inches of rain in the last few weeks, we are still experiencing drought conditions.

Have you heard the saying "The solution to pollution is dilution"? With less water in our rivers to "dilute pollution", we can expect an increase in accumulated pollutants. This is why our team is constantly patrolling and performing water quality assessments to ensure our Satilla continues to stay healthy.

On World Oceans Day, we celebrate the connection between our local waters and the global ocean. The Satilla River flows through the heart of southeast Georgia before reaching the Atlantic Ocean, carrying water, nutrients, and life from its headwaters to the coast.

What happens in the Satilla River watershed doesn't stay there. The choices we make upstream, how we manage pollution, protect wetlands, and care for our waterways, directly affect the health of our estuaries, marshes, and the Atlantic Ocean.

By protecting the Satilla River, we're helping safeguard coastal habitats, marine wildlife, and the ocean that connects us all. This World Oceans Day, remember that every river has a destination, and every action upstream matters downstream.

It’s Sunday and this week we are shining the Satilla Species Spotlight on the Diamondback Terrapin!

Diamondback terrapins are aquatic turtles living in estuarine environments along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. They are carnivores often feeding upon snails, crabs, mussels, and fish.

Populations of Diamondback terrapins have been in decline over the last few decades due to bycatch, loss of habitat, and road mortalities. They are considered a vulnerable species on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species.

Be on the lookout in our coastal areas, this little cutie was found on the roadway and safely escorted to the marsh on the other side of the road.
