This week we are shining the spotlight on "Dog Vomit" slime mold. Don’t let the name scare you away!

It's bright yellow, foamy appearance earned it the nickname “dog vomit slime mold,” but there’s nothing gross about what you’re seeing. Warm, damp conditions can bring these unusual organisms out onto mulch, logs, and forest floors. Slime molds can grow and spread through their environment in search of food. They help break down organic material and play an important role in forest ecosystems.

So, the next time you spot something that looks suspiciously like a pile of yellow dog vomit in the woods… take a closer look! You may have found one of nature’s strangest and most fascinating organisms.

What a wonderful day on the water!

This past Saturday, Satilla Riverkeeper members came together for a beautiful paddle on the Satilla River. It was the perfect opportunity to enjoy the river we love, connect with fellow river friends, and celebrate the community that makes protecting the Satilla possible.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this membership paddle such a special day! We’re grateful for our incredible members and their continued support of the Satilla River.

Here’s to many more miles on the water together!

Welcome to this week's Satilla Species Spotlight! Today, we're shouting out the Southern Leopard Frog. If you've ever hiked along a wetland, you've probably seen or heard them. This species is on the smaller side and has a characteristic "leopard print" spotted pattern. The Southern Leopard Frog is a key indicator species, so if you see them in abundance you know you have a healthy ecosystem!

The blackwater of the Satilla River is more than a beautiful reflection of Georgia’s coastal plain, it is a living part of our heritage. Its dark, tea colored waters carry the story of the forests, wetlands, wildlife, and communities that depend on this remarkable river. Protecting the Satilla means protecting the natural beauty and life that its blackwater sustains.

Please leave glass out of the river, and out of campfires.

At the last Satilla Riverkeeper cleanup, one of our volunteers cut themselves on glass that had been left behind as litter along the river’s edge.

Broken glass isn’t just unsightly, it can seriously injure volunteers, paddlers, anglers, wildlife, and anyone enjoying the Satilla.

Please don’t throw glass bottles into campfires. Glass can break or shatter from the heat, leaving dangerous shards behind that can injure people and wildlife.

If you bring glass to the river, please pack it out. Leave your campsite and the riverbank cleaner and safer than you found them.

Let’s protect the Satilla and keep it safe for everyone. 💙
