It's Sunday and this week we are shining the Satilla Species Spotlight on the Water Scorpion!

Don't let the name fool you, water scorpions are not related to scorpions. Water scorpions are carnivores that feed on insects and can be found in murky water among leaf liter. These aquatic insects can grow up to 2 inches long!

As we gather with family and friends this Memorial Day weekend, we honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. We wish everyone a safe and meaningful holiday.

Please celebrate responsibly while enjoying our rivers and outdoor spaces. Practice safe boating at all times by wearing life jackets, staying alert, and never operating a boat under the influence.

We also strongly discourage riding ATVs and other off-road vehicles in the river, as it creates dangerous conditions and damages our natural resources. In addition, we ask everyone to respect private property and posted areas while enjoying the holiday weekend.

Let’s work together to keep our community safe, respectful, and enjoyable for everyone. Happy Memorial Day!

It’s time for another Satilla Species Spotlight, and this week we are shining the light on a VERY special bird, the Brown Thrasher! The Brown Thrasher is Georgia’s very own state bird. This species likes to stay close to the ground, so you’ll often find them living in bushes, feeding on small insects and wild fruits. They may be small, but Brown Thrashers have been known to fiercely protect their nests. If you step outside anywhere in the Southeast, you are almost certain to hear one of their 1,100+ songs!
