It’s Sunday, and this week we are shining the Satilla Species Spotlight on the Bark Scorpion!

Think scorpions are just creepy little desert monsters? Think again, they reside right here in our watershed too! Bark scorpions are primarily nocturnal, spending the daylight hours hiding under rocks, bark, and other sheltered spots.

They are excellent climbers and can scale walls, trees, and even ceilings, which explains how they sometimes end up in places you definitely didn't expect!

Like many scorpions, bark scorpions appear bright blue/green under ultraviolet light, creating a fun nighttime scavenger hunt.

Bark scorpion stings can pack a powerful punch, so don't handle a scorpion just to get a closer look!

It’s Sunday, and this week we are shining the Satilla Species Spotlight on the Sundew!

Sundews may look delicate, but these fascinating carnivorous plants are perfectly adapted to life in wet, nutrient poor habitats. Their sticky, glistening droplets (often mistaken for dew) help them capture tiny insects and other prey.

Water is essential to their world, as sundews thrive in consistently moist environments, and their specialized leaves use those sparkling droplets as part of their clever insect-trapping strategy.

A little water can make all the difference in the wild world of sundews!
