LOCAL CHILDREN BENEFIT FROM FREE VISION SCREENING IN WAXHAW

The Waxhaw Lions Club partnered with the Waxhaw Presbyterian Church Child Development Center on Tuesday to provide free vision screenings for young children. In just under an hour, 24 children were screened for a variety of vision factors.

More than 12 million school-age children in the United States have some form of vision problem, yet only one in three have received eye care services before age six. Many vision problems run the risk of becoming permanent if not corrected by age seven, when the eye reaches full maturity. Vision also plays an important role in education. According to educational experts, 80 percent of learning is visual.

“Early screening leads to early detection, which helps ensure that children get the follow-up care they need,” said Lion Michael O'Brien, Certified KidSight Vision Screener. “We want to make sure that correctible vision problems don’t stand in the way of our children learning and seeing the world clearly.”

The screening event is part of a nationwide initiative called Lions KidSight USA, a national coalition that brings together Lions programs that screen children from 6 months to 8 years of age. KidSight USA was developed by Lions in the U.S. to protect the eye health of America’s children in their early years. Lions in the U.S. currently screen more than 500,000 children per year. Over 20 Waxhaw Lions and their affiliated youth organization (the Next Gen Leos) came together today to walk and guide vision impaired people on the newly opened Braille Trail in greater Charlotte. Lions Services Inc. organized the event to raise money for Vision Health programs. Detection and eradication of vision problems is a key global cause supported by Lions around the world. Proud to be a Waxhaw Lion!

Members of the Waxhaw Lions Club dropped off “Heart for Art” supplies to the Ronald McDonald House this morning. What a “feel good” operation they lead in the midst of scary times for families dealing with childhood cancer.

Last night's Lions club party was our year end celebration. Installation of new 2026 - 2027 Lions officers, presenting a Melvin Jones Fellow Award, and budgeting discussions for project planning in the new Lion Year. We had a big turn out, incoming Members and guests of the Lions. There was great food, good fun and fellowship as we laughed and enjoyed social conversations.

A very special Thank you to Lion Dan Stuart of SC Lions for commencing over our officer installation.

Melvin Jones Fellow Award: Priya Mani

I would like to sincerely thank the Waxhaw Lions family for bestowing this honor upon me. I am truly humbled and grateful to receive the Melvin Jones Fellow Award. Receiving this recognition was completely unexpected, and I am deeply touched by your kindness and confidence in me.

This honor would not have been possible without the support, encouragement, guidance, and friendship of so many people in our Lions family. I am grateful to each of you for inspiring me and giving me opportunities to serve our community.

I would also like to dedicate this award to all of our Leo members and Leo parents, whose passion, commitment, and unwavering support have made our club what it is today. Their enthusiasm for service and willingness to give back to the community continue to inspire me every day.

Thank you once again for this incredible honor. I will cherish it and continue to serve with the same dedication and spirit that our Lions and Leos exemplify.
