It’s almost time!! The Pop Top Checkers weekend starts tomorrow – June 25!

The 2nd Memorial Pop Top Checkers Tournament event begins tomorrow at 1 p.m. as we welcome family and friends to play checkers at the Woman’s Club in Waxhaw. Come and show off your skills, pick up some new strategies, or just come for the fun!

On Friday and Saturday, the checkers tournament will happen as Waxhaw becomes the Checkers Tournament capital of the world. What’s that I hear you say – “really, the world?” Yes, you read that right. Players from all over the US are attending and even a few from further away. In addition to some of our very own neighbors, and friends from other states, some of the contenders are international. For example...

Lubabalo Kondlo is a player of English draughts (also known as American checkers) from South Africa. He holds the title of Grandmaster, and is the former World Champion in GAYP (Go-As-You-Please) the most popular, unrestricted style of American Checkers.

Kondlo started to play draughts at the age of seven. In 2007, he won the World Qualifier in Las Vegas, United States and became the first draughts grandmaster from Africa.

Alexander Moiseyev is a Soviet-born American checkers player. He holds the title of Grandmaster in international draughts, Russian draughts and English draughts.He was world champion in the 3-move variation from 2003 to 2013, winning five world championships, in 2002, 2003, 2005, 2009 and 2011.

Moiseyev began playing Russian draughts at seven and by age fifteen he had achieved a Master rating. He won the US title at the international form in 1995, and went on to win the US National Tournament in 1999.

Did you know... there are more than 500 billion ways to play the first 10 moves in a game of checkers? Checkers is also a “solved” game. In 2007, a team of computer scientists led by Jonathan Schaeffer at the University of Alberta successfully "solved" American Checkers after 18 years of calculation. The supercomputer, named Chinook, mapped out roughly 39 trillion states and proved that if both players play perfectly, the game will mathematically always end in a draw.

If you’ve had your interest piqued about the game that’s been played all over the world for the last 5,000 years, you’re in luck! Checkers is coming to Main Street in Waxhaw in just 9 days!

Come be a part of the fun and play some checkers on Thursday June 25th from 1 – 5 p.m., or come and watch the masters play on Friday and Saturday, June 26 and 27. By the way, you don’t have to demonstrate all 500 billion moves. You can just use your favorites! And, if you want to play, you can bring your own opponent.

Winning at checkers by losing is an official tournament rule in checkers that if you are forced into a position where you cannot move, you forfeit the game. This creates bizarre end-game scenarios where players deliberately bait their opponents into capturing their last remaining pieces to force an opponent’s piece into a blocking, unmovable position.

The Pop Top Checkers tournament is just around the corner. Sponsored by the Mule Barn Mercantile and hosted by the Waxhaw Woman’s Club, the tournament this year will offer:

A Family and Friends event on Thursday, June 25 where everyone is invited to play from 1 – 5 p.m. Come show off your skill of the game, or pick up a few pointers. Watch our visiting Grand Master play multiple opponents on multiple boards, AT THE SAME TIME!

On Friday and Saturday, June 26 and 27 the W.H. Collins / Maxwell McCain Second Annual Memorial Pop Top Checkers tournament will be held. Come watch the Masters of the Game face-off for tournament bragging rights and some nice prize money.

City Cookout food truck will be available as will The Last Sipper (coffee cart). Come have some old-time summer fun as we bring checkers back to Main Street!

DID YOU KNOW... checkers is one of the oldest games in human civilization? The earliest version of it, called Alquerque, was played by the ancient Egyptians. Archaeologists even found early versions of the game in the ancient Iraqi city of Ur, dating back to roughly 3000 BC.

A game of strategy, checkers has over 500 billion possible board positions, and a perfect game of checkers always ends in a draw. And, it’s the only game where you can win by losing!

Collins and Maxwell McCain Pop Top Checkers Tournament, hosted by the Waxhaw Woman’s Club is happening in Waxhaw June 25-27.

June 25th will be the Friends and Family event, where everyone is welcome to play from 1-5 p.m. June 26-27 will be the tournament event where you’ll be able to observe the masters of the game with players who have come from all over the eastern part of the country.
