James McCorkle is closely tied to the earliest history of McCorkle Cemetery and is recognized at the cemetery as a Revolutionary War patriot. His commemorative marker identifies him as “Our Great Grandfather, Jas. McCorkle and Family,” and cemetery records suggest he was likely the first person buried here.

On Memorial Day, we remember not only the service of those who helped shape our nation, but also the early families whose lives and sacrifices became part of the history of the Waxhaws.

Among the early burials connected to McCorkle Cemetery is Samuel Givens, identified in cemetery records as a South Carolina Revolutionary War veteran.

Though his marker information contains no dates, his name connects McCorkle Cemetery to the Revolutionary generation and to the early families of the Waxhaws.

On this Memorial Day, we pause to remember Clarence E. “Eugene” Stephens, June 10, 1895 – October 21, 1953

Buried at McCorkle Cemetery, Clarence Stephens is identified in cemetery records as NC PVT 310 AUX RMT QMC WW I, reflecting his service during the First World War.

Today, we honor his memory and the memory of all veterans laid to rest at McCorkle Cemetery. Their service and sacrifice are an enduring part of both our nation’s history and the story of Waxhaw.

Remembering Mary M. Price, March 17, 1867 – July 24, 1867

This small marker at McCorkle Cemetery remembers Mary M. Price, the infant daughter of J.W. and M.L. Price.

Mary lived only four months and seven days, passing away on July 24, 1867. Her stone, though modest in size, carries a deeply human reminder of how many families in the 19th century experienced the loss of children at very young ages.

Scouting America's Venturing Crew 19 has adopted McCorkle Cemetery and is working to carefully clean and document markers like Mary’s. The darker photo was taken on February 20, 2026, and the cleaner version was taken on May 8, after careful cleaning using cemetery-safe methods.

Even Mary’s short life on earth deserves to be preserved, honored, and remembered.

Remembering Nancy L. Givens Therrell, 1837–1915

As Mother’s Day weekend approaches, we pause to remember Nancy L. Givens Therrell, whose marker at McCorkle Cemetery identifies her simply and tenderly as “Mother.”

Nancy was born in Union County, North Carolina, in 1837 and lived through a period of enormous change in local and national history. She was the wife of James W. Therrell and the mother of several children whose family names remain connected to the history of this cemetery and the surrounding Waxhaw community.

Her death certificate records that she died on July 7, 1915, at approximately 78 years old. She was laid to rest at McCorkle Cemetery. More than a century later, her stone, having been repaired at some point, remains a quiet reminder that every marker represents a life, a family, and a story worth preserving.
