The Museum of the Waxhaws is Union County’s cultural and history learning center. We are a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization managed by a Board of Directors. The Museum showcases and demonstrates history and culture to visitors in the context of indoor and outdoor exhibits, artistic performances, historical reenactments, and group tours. The basis of our mission is to teach residents of Union County

about our regional history. For security reasons, when our facility is closed our grounds and outdoor exhibits are NOT open to the public. are NOT allowed on museum ground at any time. Commercial/Professional photography is prohibited. Pets are not allowed on the grounds.

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT — WE’RE MAKING IT A FULL WEEKEND!

The excitement surrounding our WWI & WWII Living History Event has been incredible and we have some BIG news to share!

What was originally planned as a one-day event is officially expanding to an ENTIRE WEEKEND!

For two days, the museum grounds will come alive with the sights, sounds, stories, and history of the First and Second World Wars. Meet living historians and reenactors, explore military displays and equipment, experience demonstrations, and discover the stories of the men and women whose lives were forever changed by these defining moments in history.

This weekend is about more than stepping into the past. It is an opportunity to remember, educate, and honor those who served and sacrificed and to ensure their stories continue to be told for generations to come.

With even more planned for TWO full days, this is shaping up to be an unforgettable weekend of living history at the Museum of the Waxhaws.

The fife is calling. The drums are rolling. The Hornet’s Nest awaits.

Step back into 1780 during the Battle of Charlotte American Revolution Weekend at the Museum of the Waxhaws!

Join us for two full days of living history, military encampments, demonstrations, music, and the sights and sounds of the American Revolution.

Saturday, September 26 • 10 AM–4 PM
Sunday, September 27 • 10 AM–3 PM

Battle reenactment at 2 PM BOTH DAYS!

Living history and demonstrations will continue throughout the weekend, with the complete event schedule being released September 1.

PARKING:
1101 Old Providence Road, Waxhaw
Parking is directly beside the museum.

For the safety of our reenactors and visitors, the museum grounds will be closed to through traffic during the event.

Open every Friday & Saturday from 10 AM–5 PM

Take your time exploring our exhibits, then stop by our Museum Gift Shop, also open during regular museum hours, for books, gifts, and local history finds!

In September of 1780, British forces marched into Charlotte and straight into what would become known as the Hornet’s Nest of Rebellion.

This September, experience that history as it comes alive once again at the Battle of Charlotte American Revolution Reenactment & Living History Weekend at the Museum of the Waxhaws.

Watch the armies march, hear the muskets and artillery, meet living historians, explore military camps, and step into the world of 1780.

A LITTLE SURPRISE IN THE MUSEUM GARDEN!

Look what decided to grow right alongside our cotton! This big squash was not planted on purpose, but apparently it had other plans.

That’s part of the fun of an old-fashioned garden you never quite know what might pop up! Somehow a volunteer squash plant found its way into the cotton patch, and now it’s producing quite the impressive surprise.

Sometimes the garden grows exactly what you planned…and sometimes nature adds something of its own!

Take a look at what’s growing at the Museum of the Waxhaws! Our homestead garden is producing Candy Roaster squash, an old-time variety with deep roots in Appalachian and Southern foodways.

Known for its large size and sweet, rich flesh, Candy Roaster squash has been grown for generations and was prized because it could be stored and enjoyed well after the growing season ended. It was traditionally roasted, baked, or used in pies and other dishes.

Our homestead garden isn’t just about growing vegetables it’s another way we can bring the past to life. Plants like this help tell the story of what families grew, preserved, cooked, and depended upon in generations past.

And this Candy Roaster looks like it’s well on its way!
