🎹 PIANIST / KEYBOARDIST NEEDED!

Waxhaw Community Theatre is looking for a talented pianist/keyboardist to join our upcoming production of "It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play," adapted by Joe Landry!

This production brings the beloved story of George Bailey and Bedford Falls to life as a 1940s live radio broadcast, with actors performing behind microphones, live Foley sound effects, music, and all the warmth, humor, and heart of the Christmas classic.

We’re looking for a musician who can use the keyboard as part of the storytelling.

Rather than simply accompanying full songs, our pianist will help create the atmosphere of an old-time radio drama with short musical cues, underscoring, improvisation, and transitions that react to what’s happening onstage.

A few notes of music might introduce a character, punctuate a funny moment, build suspense, underscore an emotional scene, or carry us from one scene into the next.

Limited sheet music is provided, so strong improvisational skills and the ability to play by feel are important. We would love someone who enjoys listening to the action onstage and using music to help tell the story in real time.

When the sun goes down and the streets grow dark, the stories of Waxhaw’s past come back to life.

This October, join us for Waxhaw After Dark: Haunted History Tours. A guided walking tour through historic Downtown Waxhaw filled with local history, eerie legends, and ghost stories from the town’s past.

Proceeds from the October 24 Fright Night tours will benefit the Downtown Waxhaw Association. Proceeds from the October 23, 30, and 31 tours will benefit Waxhaw Community Theatre.

These tours combine history with legends, ghost stories, and theatrical storytelling. Participation by younger guests is at the discretion of a parent or guardian.

He begins as a young man dreaming of leaving Bedford Falls and seeing the world, but life continually redirects him toward his family and community. This role requires an actor capable of carrying both the humor and emotional weight of the story.

Female, Age 30–40

Sally Applewhite is the company’s leading lady, portraying Mary Bailey. Mary is warm, intelligent, playful, compassionate, and quietly strong. From her youthful romance with George through marriage, parenthood, and hardship, she remains one of the strongest and most grounding forces in his life. We’re looking for an actress who can bring warmth, humor, sincerity, and emotional depth to the role.

✨ FREDDIE FILMORE
Male, Age 40-60

A versatile radio performer who portrays several memorable characters throughout George Bailey’s story. Freddie requires strong characterization, comedic timing, and the ability to create distinct personalities using voice, physicality, and quick transitions. Jazzbo is another member of the radio company taking on multiple characters throughout the broadcast. He brings energy, personality, and classic old-time radio flair to the stage. We’re looking for a confident performer with strong vocal characterization, comedic instincts, and the ability to make each role feel completely distinct.

Lana is a member of the radio company portraying several of the women who populate Bedford Falls. This role offers an actress the opportunity to create multiple distinct characters throughout the evening, moving between personalities, voices, ages, and comedic and heartfelt moments.

✨ ENSEMBLE & FOLEY ARTISTS

We are also seeking performers to help create the bustling world of Bedford Falls and the live radio studio itself!

Our Foley artists will create sound effects live onstage, helping bring everything from footsteps and doors to telephones and the sounds of Bedford Falls to life right in front of the audience.

Waxhaw Community Theatre is seeking an actress to portray Lana Sherwood in our upcoming production of "It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play," adapted by Joe Landry.

Lana Sherwood is a versatile member of the fictional 1940s radio company, stepping behind the microphone to bring several of the women of Bedford Falls to life throughout the Christmas broadcast.

This is a wonderful role for a character actress who loves variety!

Lana helps create the colorful world surrounding George Bailey, taking on multiple characters throughout the story. She must move between different personalities, ages, relationships, and moments, sometimes with only seconds to make the transition.

Each character needs to feel distinct and recognizable to the audience. Changes in voice, rhythm, mannerisms, energy, and physicality all become part of the fun of performing in the radio-play format.

We are looking for an actress with strong comedic instincts, vocal versatility, and the confidence to make bold character choices. Lana's track offers plenty of opportunities for humor and personality, but also calls for warmth and sincerity as the story moves into its more emotional moments.

Because the production is staged as a live 1940s radio broadcast, vocal performance is especially important. Clear diction, strong timing, creativity, and the ability to establish a character quickly at the microphone will all be valuable in this role.

Harry “Jazzbo” Haywood is a versatile member of the fictional 1940s radio company, stepping behind the microphone to bring several of the residents of Bedford Falls to life throughout the Christmas Eve broadcast.

This is a fantastic role for a character actor who loves variety!

Unlike George and Mary, who are primarily portrayed by one radio actor throughout the evening, Harry is responsible for helping create the larger world of Bedford Falls. He moves between multiple characters over the course of the story, sometimes with very little time to make the transition.

Each character needs to feel distinct and immediately recognizable to the audience. Changes in voice, rhythm, mannerisms, personality, and physicality all become part of the fun.

We are looking for an actor with strong comedic instincts, vocal versatility, and a willingness to make bold character choices. The ideal performer will be comfortable experimenting with different voices and personalities while still keeping each character believable and grounded within the world of the story.

Male, Age 40–60

Waxhaw Community Theatre is seeking an actor to portray Freddie Filmore in our upcoming production of "It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play," adapted by Joe Landry.

Freddie is one of the busiest performers in the fictional 1940s radio company, bringing multiple residents of Bedford Falls to life throughout the broadcast, including the lovable guardian angel Clarence Oddbody and the formidable Henry F. Potter.

This is a true character actor's role!

Freddie must jump between characters who could hardly be more different. As Clarence, he brings warmth, sincerity, humor, and an endearing innocence to the angel determined to show George Bailey what the world would have been like without him. As Potter, he becomes George's cold, calculating adversary and one of Bedford Falls' most powerful men.

Throughout the broadcast, Freddie takes on additional characters as well, requiring the actor to create distinct personalities through changes in voice, mannerisms, rhythm, and physicality.

We are looking for an actor who enjoys transformation and isn't afraid to make bold character choices. Strong comedic instincts are important, but so is the ability to shift into the more serious and emotional moments of the story. Each character should feel distinct and recognizable to the audience, even when those changes happen quickly at the microphone.
