The Ellis County Veterans Celebration is more than an event. It is a chance to show those who served our country that their sacrifice still matters and that this community has not forgotten them.

We are looking for dependable, mission-minded volunteers who want to help us create that experience. Whether you serve behind the scenes or out front welcoming guests, your time can help a veteran feel important, respected, and deeply appreciated.

Happy Birthday to W.W.II veteran Charles Atchley of Waxahachie.

Atchley served as an infantry rifleman in the 75th Infantry Division, one of the units that faced brutal winter conditions during the pivotal Battle of the Bulge. This historic conflict, which took place in the Ardennes region of Belgium and Luxembourg, is remembered as one of the largest and bloodiest battles fought by the United States during the war. For Atchley, it was also deeply personal. Despite his small physical frame, he joined the front lines during what was described as the harshest European winter in half a century. Charles was awarded two Bronze Stars and the French Legion of Merit for his bravery.

Wednesday February 4th is his 100th birthday.

Two absolute Ellis County legends from World War II that first met each other on a snowy winter night during the Battle of the Bulge. Little did they know that they had grown up just a few miles from each other. Tank Commander Lt. Harry Hitt and Col. Tom “Ike” Morris. They were giants of men in my opinion.
