WILDLIFE WEDNESDAY
Recently, our Coordinating Wildlife Biologist, Jocelyn Hernandez, led a site visit at the Flycatcher Ranch in Goliad County. She was accompanied with an all-star group of women from our partner organizations:
👤 Meagan Lesak – Texas Parks and Wildlife
👤 Katie Harris – The Xerces Society
👤 Ashley Reed – USFWS Partners for Fish and Wildlife (PFW)
Together with landowner Eric Grahmann, they toured Flycatcher Ranch to see the amazing results of three years of dedicated work reversing woody brush encroachment and restoring native prairie. Through invasive plant control, brush management, and planting native seed mixes, the ranch has truly become a haven for pollinators, quail, and other wildlife.
Record-Breaking Nest:
The standout of the day was observing an active bobwhite quail nest nestled near a prickly pear cactus containing 26 eggs!
Connecting with Neighbors:
When considering habitat restoration on a meaningful scale, working across fence lines is essential. The team did exactly that, not only visiting with the landowner of the Flycatcher Ranch, but also with some of the neighboring landowners that were coordinated with as well that same trip. These efforts are just 1 example of our staff working to build collaborative, landscape-scale opportunities to expand grassland conservation and healthy wildlife habitat across the Texas Gulf Coast.
Funding Opportunities:
Are you a coastal Texas landowner? We discussed a fantastic funding opportunity available along the Gulf Coast. Developed in partnership with the USFWS Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program and Quail Forever, this program supports native grassland enhancement efforts that benefit pollinators, livestock, and wildlife alike.
