Spring Improvements Underway at Waverly Country Club
By Mark Chance
Spring cleaning is underway at the Waverly Country Club, and members will notice several exciting improvements throughout 2026. One of the most noticeable changes is the removal of the old cart sheds behind the ninth green, eliminating a longtime eyesore and opening up a beautiful wooded view for golfers to enjoy. Additional updates are also planned for the remaining cart sheds, including fresh paint for both the structures and their roofs.
Golf Course Vice President Mark Chance has partnered with club member and local businessman Drew Simpson to complete the work. Chance explained, “The remaining sheds are still in decent shape, but they were overdue for an exterior refresh. Repainting the metal roofs will help prevent rust and create a cleaner, more consistent appearance throughout the course.” Members who own personal golf carts may continue to store them at the club for a nominal annual fee.
The club’s grounds crew has also been busy improving several tee boxes by removing select trees to allow more sunlight to reach the turf. Chance noted that while the course has a strong irrigation and fertilization program, the large mature trees throughout the property absorb significant amounts of water and create heavy shade in some areas.
“As we move into warmer weather, healthy turf growth depends on a balance of direct sunlight, irrigation, and warm temperatures,” Chance said. “We love the character the mature trees bring to the course, so we have been very selective with removals. However, some pruning and tree removal is necessary to ensure the turf receives the water and sunlight it needs to thrive.”
These improvements are expected to enhance both course conditions and playability by creating more options for rotating tee placements, which helps reduce wear on the grass and keeps the course looking its best. Many members and guests agree the course has never looked better.
Another major improvement planned for 2026 is a facelift for the club’s swimming pool. Drew Simpson’s crew will begin resurfacing the pool interior and applying a fresh coat of specialized aquatic paint in time for the traditional Memorial Day opening.
Club Manager Jessica Lytton-Wallace shared, “We have seen increased pool usage from our members, and with that comes the need for routine maintenance. We are fortunate to have members with expertise in pool operations, chemistry, and mechanical systems who help keep everything running safely and efficiently. Drew’s work will extend the life of the pool, and we are excited to welcome everyone back for another great summer season.”
Since 1959, the Waverly Country Club has proudly contributed to the Waverly and Humphreys County communities. Located on Golf Club Road at the top of the hill behind the elementary and junior high schools, the club welcomes visitors who may not have experienced it recently — or ever before — to stop by for a tour and perhaps even enjoy a round of golf.
