I spoke with Sheriff Picket this afternoon, according to him SMV signs ARE needed on all UTV vehicles and they are not allowed to go over 35 regardless of what type of road you are on. This law was put into order because related accidents rose from 12 to 20 from 2023 to 2024.

He also confirmed that the operation that happened with our club poker run was initiated by the Iowa State Patrol, not the Bremer County Sheriff’s Department, they were asked to participate. He also stated that they only wrote 4 tickets and non of them were for SMV signs. Which I agree with and the tickets they wrote were justified.

From my research and understanding most of the tickets were wrote by the Iowa State Patrol. As for the SMV confusion, the majority were warnings.

I understand the laws are in place to keep our riders safe and I completely agree with that. We don’t want to see anyone on our rides hurt or in trouble. I just feel it could have been handled so much better than it was.

I will update after the Supervisor meeting tomorrow.
